A study of Bipedal anomalies

Historical study of Dogmen

By Phill RossPublished 5 months ago • 16 min read

Before I begin this study I would like to introduce myself. If you haven't read any of my articles before, I am an author, a historian, an amateur archaeologist, a musician, artist and a photographer.

I have extensive experience in remote sensing, archaeological study and an ability to look past what we are told or what we have read about our history. Having an open mind to the fact that early Antiquarians were not always correct in their theories or suggested uses of historical artefacts and locations.

As such I do not believe in superstition, folklore, hear-say or the paranormal. I look at things from a different perspective and base my findings on facts.

We have all heard of Werewolves, made famous by movies such as American Werewolf in London, Teenwolf, Werewolves of London, Dog soldiers and many other great “horror” movies. The concept of a half-human/half-canine creature is not as far fetched as you may think though and throughout time there have been whispers of an ancient race of “dog” headed creatures.

Probably the most well-known of these is the Egyptian deity Anubis, the jackal (or dog) headed God of the after-life worshipped from around 2700 BC. Although considered a myth there are many depictions of Anubis throughout Ancient Egyptian tombs.

In the 5th Century BC the Greek philosopher Ctesias wrote about a tribe of dog-headed men that resided in the mountains of India. Calling them Cynocephali which translates literally to “Dog heads” and stating that they communicated by barking and wore animal skins.

The 5th Century BC saw several writings come forth with their subject being Dog-headed tribes, The Histories of Herodatus mention this same tribe but places them in Libya.

Another Greek Philosopher by the name of Megasthenes in the 4th Century BC also wrote about a tribe of Dog-headed men in his book Indica. He described them as hunters who communicated through barking.

These writings paved the way for future writings by the Greeks and Romans who often wrote as though they had lived along-side these Dog-headed “people”, viewing them as a race that lives on the fringe of existence rather than something supernatural.

In this modern age we aren't as superstitious or as God-fearing as our ancestors, we understand much of the naturalistic world and it is possible that the above writers were mistaking the dog-heads for primates or larger dire wolves.

However, with the rise in Social Media we have also seen a rise in “alleged” sightings in the UK and across the known world. So, what is causing more people to come forward and risk being ridiculed by their peers? Is it a rise in mental illness among people? Are these sightings just the result of over-active imaginations and misidentification?

It could be argued that this is the case, however lets take a step back for a moment. Our Ancestors described these creatures in great detail, tall creatures with a dogs head, around 6-7ft tall, muscular and communicating in a tongue humans cannot understand. Very similar descriptions to modern sightings.

What if the races of Dog-heads were real? What if they weren't wiped out and instead were forced underground? It may sound far fetched but there are Somalian tablets that describe a strange phenomenon which forced humans underground for three generations. If humans can live underground for such a long time, why couldn't a race of Bipedal canines?

In the UK there are thousands of miles of cave systems and old mine tunnels, many of which are too dangerous for humans to explore, others that just haven't been discovered and some that only a small portion has been mapped.

Is it possible that a race could survive this long without being discovered? The answer to this is simply YES! This has been proved that there are still tribes in the remote jungles of the Amazon that have never had contact with the outside world and were only discovered in the last Century.

We should look at the modern sightings not as a phenomenon, not as a shift in the space-time continuum allowing paranormal creatures to interact, and definitely not as aliens, but as a small pocket of an ancient race traversing the countryside.

In the UK there are at least 50 locations where the name translates to being associated with Wolves or Hounds. The following list is probably not comprehensive but it does show a vast network of places that can be reached easily without hitting civilisation if travelling from one to the other.

As you can see the correlating names and translations all relate to either wolves, hounds or hound men. Of course from a historical perspective these names derive from Roman, Saxon and Viking origin and could simply be referring to a normal grey wolf which occupied the UK up until the late 1600s when they were eradicated.

We should also take into account the names such as The settlement of the Hound-Keeper or The village of the Hound-men, and even the Wolf's secret (Wolverhampton). Are these names referring purely to domesticated canines kept by “keepers” or “men” and what is the Wolf's Secret?

We know that there were historical figures named Wolf, Wulf or names relating to the species of wolf we know of today. As such if we cross reference those historical figures with the location names we can rule out some of them as being simply associated with a person known as Wolf.

So, from a logical historical perspective these locations are thought to be associated with packs of grey wolves which we are told were a big problem in the past. However, as I mentioned earlier if we join these locations together with lines, it gives us a whole new perspective. Following the line South to North (or North to south) there is a clear green way of open fields, ditches, streams and patches of woodland which are more than enough to give anyone/anything cover to travel from one end of the country to the other without wandering too close to a town, city or village.

We have all heard reports of big cats roaming the English countryside, and more physical evidence of this has come to light over the years, proving that there is indeed a small population of apex predators hidden in plain sight among the undergrowth, and that these felines travel a network of green space to protect their territory and hunt.

So, if something as large as a black leopard can travel the country with only a handful of sightings, why is it so far fetched to believe that other creatures we don't know about could also be out there?

AI reconstruction of how Danes Dyke may have looked when it was first built

In the last few years I discovered the Truth Proof series of YouTube videos which focus mostly on the Danes Dyke, Flamborough and Bempton area of East Yorkshire. Danes Dyke (which has nothing to do with Danes or Vikings) is thought to have been built by man in or around the Bronze-Age, it is a 30 meter deep ditch which would have had a banking and wooden palisade atop it on the Flamborough side.

This side of the ditch being much higher than the opposite landlocked side, it stretches around 4 or 5 miles and essentially cuts off the Flamborough headland from the rest of the land. No one knows why it was built, it certainly can't have been a defensive ditch to protect those who lived on the headland during the Bronze-Age, as there were only two settlements which can be seen clearly on Lidar, and neither of these was large enough to house more than one or two small families.

So, this begs the question, what was its purpose? Was it once a channel allowing people to sail along it thus cutting off the headland much like a canal? Although plausible it is doubtful as the ditch rises upwards.

Was it built to keep someone, or something out of the headland? Again plausible but not feasible. If it were defensive why were there only two small settlements? I, however, have a 3rd theory.

What if it was built to contain something? The village of Hunmanby (The village of the Hound-men) is only a short distance away.

Is it possible that the Hound-men weren't keepers of canines but were themselves men with a hounds head? Perhaps something happened which caused humans to move the hound men onto Flamborough where they were essentially cut off from the rest of the country by Danes Dyke?

There have been thousands of alleged sightings of what we now call Dogmen all across the UK, one thing of note is the lines between each location with a name relating to wolf or hound, has had at least one or more sightings along the line or within the boundaries of the location named after a wolf/hound. Is this coincidence? It could be but if we look closely this network seems to be the perfect route to cross the country.

If we are to believe the sightings it tells a complete story of these creatures sticking to certain infrastructures, following the same lines for years. On the subject of sightings, I cannot say I have ever seen anything I could describe as a “Dogman” or “werewolf” however I have had a few experiences I couldn't explain logically.

At one time in my life I was a traveller, I would hitch hike up and down the country, visiting friends and often busking in whatever town or city was nearest to where I ended up. I have camped in places many would consider “spooky” such as graveyards, castle ruins, thick woodland and even a canopy of trees on a roundabout somewhere near Yeovil. In the 17 years of travelling I can only name three events that really shook me.

The first took place in 1995. I was hitch-hiking to see my then girlfriend who lived in Camborne, Cornwall, I had been dropped off at Plymouth around 10-11pm and to continue my journey I had to cross the estuary bridge where I was then greeted by a long tunnel with no public right of way. The traffic was still flowing at this point so using my brain and good sense of direction I made my way around the tunnel to Saltash, arriving at the other side around midnight.

The traffic slowed until it eventually stopped and I was still stood on the south side of this tunnel at 2-3am ( I didn't have a watch or mobile phone so I'm unsure of the exact time). This was mid-November and as I stood there I could see my breath rushing forward and rising up in small plumes of fog. I happened to glance across the dual carriageway at a thick copse of trees, as I did so the air turned thick, the chickens I had heard clucking away behind me went silent and then I saw it.

A thick plume of “Breath” over 6ft high bellowed out of the trees then rose upwards, it was too much and too thick for a human and my immediate thoughts were perhaps it was a horse that had escaped its paddock. I saw nothing else, heard nothing and as I gripped the handle of my blade that I always carried back then I stared deep into the dark woodland trying to see what it was that had made the breath.

A few moments later a truck came trundling out of the tunnel and pulled to a stop giving me a welcome rescue from the unease I felt standing there.

To this day I still don't know what caused that thermo anomoly, all I know is I felt a fear that I had never felt before.

Fast forward to 1996 and I was living back in my home-town of Wakefield, West Yorkshire. I and a friend decided to go camping at a woodland on the outskirts of the city called Chevet Woods (Haw park woods). Just a normal camping trip turned into something neither of us could explain.

We pitched out tent deep in the woods after finding a little clearing. Got a fire going and spent the night talking and enjoying a spliff or two. As it got late we doused the fire and got in the tent where we immediately fell asleep. Our sleep was soon disturbed by screams.

We put these down to either foxes or kids messing about in the car park half a mile away, knowing that sound travels especially in woodland. Then we heard loud clicking noises, a sound I can only describe as “whoop whoop” and wood being hit against wood. It lasted for around half an hour to and hour and then fell silent.

Again we put this down to kids messing about and thought nothing more of it, waking the next morning we packed up and left without incident.

A few months later I had my third experience. I decided I would hitch hike to Tintagel so packed my tent, sleeping bag and guitar and headed off, for some reason when I reached Ferrybridge service station I changed my mind and headed east instead, finding myself in Flamborough. I found a very cheap campsite for the week and spent much of the week ferrying myself between Bridlington and Flamborough, busking through the day.

On the 4th day we had thunderstorms so I spent this laid in my tent watching the lightening and playing my acoustic guitar. The next day it cleared up but was still a little overcast, I took it on myself to go explore the cliff tops. I'm unsure how long I walked northward along the coast path but I have found out since I reached RAF Bempton when without warning the sea mist came in.

The fog was so thick it engulfed me to the point I couldn't see my feet, let alone the cliff edge which at the time had no fence along it. Something told me to stop, I just got this thought in my head saying “Stop now! Turn around and go back” I felt the same feeling of dread, the silence was deafening no sea birds screeched, no wind blew and all I could hear were the waves crashing against the shore below.

I turned on my heels 180 degrees then made a beeline to the right where I hoped the wooden fence separating RAF Bempton from the cliff path was. I found it and made my way nervously back to Flamborough. It may have just been the thick fog playing trick with my mind but I felt like there was something ahead of me before I turned around, and it felt like it was following me until I reached the safety of the cafe at Flamborough.

At this time I had never heard of Dogmen and a Werewolf was just a fictional character in a book or movie to me. It wasn't until I discover Paul Sinclair's TruthProof YouTube channel that I discovered the similarities between my experiences and those of people moments before they are said to have seen something they describe as a Dogman.

The amount of sightings is staggering and researcher Deborah Hatwell has created a Google Earth overlay showing all the sightings that have been reported to her and others she has discovered in her research on cryptids. When viewed in Google Earth the country is littered with sightings, although around 20-30% of those logged are for things like big cats, boggarts, ghosts and other paranormal activity, the remaining 70-80% are sightings of Dogmen, Bigfoot-like creatures, hairy men or ape-like creatures.

It has to make one wonder if the Greek philosophers and ancient Egyptians were telling the truth, after all in a time when education wasn't popular and spiritual belief took precedent, a bipedal canine 6-7ft tall and built a brick outhouse (muscular) would be seen as a God or as something otherworldly.

Did these dog-headed tribes survive through the years? If so, is it plausible they either retired or were forced to live underground? It would explain why these sightings are almost always in low light or complete darkness, it would also explain the smell many report. A dank, stale, damp almost rotting smell, similar to if you were to wash your clothes and leave them in the machine for several days instead of hanging them to dry.

Personally I have no sense of smell (which does come in handy around smelly cats and dogs when they let one rip) so cannot say if that stench was apparent in my own experiences.

If we dive deeper into the alleged sightings, we also find reports of military or governmental involvement. In 1948 somewhere in Dartmoor there was an alleged capture of a bipedal creature, the military took it away. In the 90s a large creature was knocked down close to the roundabout which takes you from Howden to either Scarborough or Bridlington on the east coast. The report from people who saw it state that again the military arrived and cleaned it up.

In the USA a truck driver saw a bipedal wolf running alongside his truck and attempting to reach in through the open window, the driver opened fire with a large calibre handgun and saw the creature stumble in his mirror. A short time later he was visited by men in black suits who stated “he had killed their asset” then informed him to stay silent about the event and that it never happened.

So, is there a population of Bipedal creatures being controlled by the Government? We may be getting into the realm of conspiracy theories here, so I will dial this back a little. I am continuing my research into this and attempting to find more historical links, we know early Antiquarians are often incorrect, we know they have found pits with human and canine bone fragments, some of which did not fit within the confines of canines or wolves known species.

These are now hidden away in boxes in museums, sold off to private collectors or lost as the early antiquarians were more interested in treasures, tablets and statues than a few old bones. The bones were often sorted into two piles, Human and canine without any thought that the bones may belong together. This would be one explanation for the question; why haven't we found remains, we could also argue that if they do exist in subterranean cave systems that haven't been explored, perhaps their dead are carried back underground?

Whatever the truth, it is undeniable that wolves, wolf men and similar creatures were recorded throughout history and many of these fit perfectly with modern descriptions. The historian in me says it is all fiction, and the coincidence of wolf names in towns/villages etc. is simply because we had a population of grey wolves and people named after wolves.

Yet there is a part of me that wonders, what if? After all there are many places on earth that have never been explored fully, the oceans, cave systems and old mines being just a few. Who are we to say with certainty that there is nothing else out there, hiding in the shadows, watching and waiting for us to pass by so it can be on its way.

Many sightings state the creature is moving with purpose, perhaps traversing the green corridors of valleys, woodland and lonesome moors.
