We use refrigerators that run on electricity, which is normal. But have you heard about a refrigerator that does not need electricity to run? Yes, you heard it right, you do not need electricity to store your vegetables, cool your water and more. I recently heard about them. It is an Indian company MItticool which makes this clay Refrigerator. I am planning on purchasing this product, but currently, it is out of stock. I will share my review as soon as I get one. We will talk about MItticool clay Refrigerator that does not need electricity, how it functions, and why we need more products like these to have a sustainable living.

MItticool Clay Refrigerator 50 Liter

This refrigerator is designed to keep food and drinks fresh without using electricity. The MittiCool Clay refrigerator is a sustainable & unique product that uses Terracotta clay as the main insulating material. Clay is known for its excellent insulating properties. The clay walls help to maintain a cool temperature in the refrigerator for several hours even on the hottest days. Clay also helps to maintain the moisture level in the refrigerator, which is important to keep fruits and vegetables fresh. This fridge maintains a 10-15° C lower temperature than the room temperature.

The total capacity of this Fridge is 50 litres, with 10 litres of water stored on the top. This water is used to keep the walls of the clay cool, which helps in storing fruits and vegetables for 4-5 days and dairy products for 24 hours. You can also drink this water using the tap.

This maintenance of this Refrigerator is also very minimum. You just need to wipe the fridge with a clean sponge every month or so, there are no compressors, condensers, or evaporators which you need to repair or replace.

It is to be stored in a clean and dry place with proper ventilation, which will improve the cooling of the fridge

How to use

Before using the refrigerator, fill the upper water tank with water and empty it after 12 hours to allow the clay to get used to the water. For the first 3 months of use, add only 1 litre of water to the tank to avoid leakage into the lower chamber due to high porosity. After 3 months, you can slowly increase the amount of water in the tank to 10 litres. Read more here

Benefits

  • No electricity
  • Very low maintenance (practically no maintenance)
  • The original taste of fruits and vegetables is retained, as there is no chemical used to store them.
  • Environment friendly, No carbon emission
  • Can be used anywhere, like off-grid situations, camping, etc

The only disadvantage is you have to take care of the fridge, it should not fall from a height otherwise it will break.

Why Should we opt for products like this?

What is sustainability? It is something that does not harm the environment and also fulfils the need. A product that will last with minimum damage to our environment, creating minimum waste and making sure to protect our nature for future generations. Sustainability is something which we never thought about, we do not have a sustainable way to manufacture products, travel, work or eat our food.
