6 Ways to Grow Garlic Using Bottles or Egg Containers

Best Tips to Grow Garlic Without Soil

By Lindsay WilkersonPublished 2 years ago • 6 min read

Planting herbs or vegetables at home can be used as a trick to save household expenses. One of the herbs that can be planted is garlic. In addition to being easy to care for, planting garlic is certainly more useful because this spice is always used in almost every cooking process. Especially at certain moments, the selling price of garlic can skyrocket.

The way to plant single garlic and eating garlic is no different. Both can grow well and produce abundant harvests as long as the humidity in the planting medium is maintained. Fortunately, garlic can easily grow in many planting media, even without using soil. Here's an easy way to plant garlic that can be practiced.

1. Compared to other methods, planting garlic in pots or polybags is considered easier. The care is also simple and does not require special fertilizer.

The key to successfully planting garlic in polybags is selecting the garlic bulbs. Make sure the garlic bulbs to be planted have not been exposed to chemicals so that they do not sprout and can grow well. Here's how to plant garlic at home that beginners can try.

Fill the pot with soil and leave about 2 cm of space from the rim. The soil used can be mixed with a little sand and compost. It is better to use a pot that has holes so that the humidity in the soil is stable enough.

Place the garlic bulbs about 4 to 6 inches (10 to 15 cm) into the soil upside down — with the pointed end facing up. Then place the pot in an area that gets 8 hours of direct sunlight. You can place it on a kitchen windowsill where the sunlight is not so hot.

Make sure the soil is well-watered and not too dry so that the garlic bulbs do not rot and can grow. After 4 or 5 months, garlic is usually ready to be harvested. The characteristics of garlic that are ready to be harvested are when the leaves start to turn brown.

After harvesting, hang and air the garlic first for a few days so that it does not rot easily and is more durable when stored later.

2. Although planting garlic without soil is quite complicated, this method is currently trending. It is said that planting hydroponic garlic can speed up the harvest period.

If you have succeeded with soil as the planting medium, try planting garlic with water or what is popularly called the hydroponic method. This method does not entirely use water until harvest time. You still need other planting media such as charcoal and also husks to help the growth process of the garlic. Here are the steps.

Prepare the garlic bulbs that will be used as seeds — take advantage of the garlic that has started to sprout, then plant it in water media with the help of wet cotton. Let the sprouts grow about 5 to 10 cm before planting hydroponically.

Make a hole in the container then cover it with flannel and make a wick for water absorption. Put hydroponic nutrients in the form of garlic liquid into the container.

Mix the soil with compost, rice husks, and charcoal using a ratio of 1:1:1. Place this mixture in the top bottle of the container that has been covered with flannel.

Place the garlic seeds into the bottle holes and cover them with the planting medium mixture. Firm the soil so the seeds can stand firmly.

Water the seeds when the soil starts to dry out and make sure the garlic gets enough sunlight for at least 6 hours a day. If the solution decreases, immediately refill it. After 90 to 120 days, the garlic is ready to be harvested.

3. For planting garlic in an Aqua bottle to be successful, you have to cut a little of the top of the bottle and make small holes around it.

This method also applies if you want to try planting garlic in an Aqua glass. If it has been perforated and cut, then just turn it over and fill it with planting media. Practice the following steps.

Store the garlic in the refrigerator for 7 to 14 days or until it sprouts. Once the roots appear, place them on a damp paper towel and place them in a small container. Remove and replace the water in the container every day so that the garlic shoots do not rot.

Mix the soil and compost and then put it in the top part of the bottle. Then turn it over and place it in the bottom part of the bottle that has been filled with fertilizer water.

Embed the garlic bud 3 to 5 cm deep. Keep the soil moist and make sure it is not too wet or dry. Once a week, spray the garlic with liquid compost.

If pests are growing around it, clean it immediately. If the spring onions have started to turn yellow-brown, it is a sign that the garlic bulbs are ready to be harvested. After harvesting, dry the garlic for a while to avoid rotting.

4. Actually, the way to plant garlic in PVC pipes is almost the same as in bottles. The process is also similar to the hydroponic planting method.

After preparing the seeds, you need to make the planting medium. Compared to bottles, using PVC pipe planting media is more complicated. But this method can be used to plant a lot of garlic at once. Here's how to plant it.

Prepare a minimum of 2.5 to 3 inches of PVC pipe so that the tuber growth is more optimal. Make holes in the PVC pipe with a diameter of 5 to 6 cm and a distance between holes of 10 cm.

Use fertile soil with humus or just mix the soil with organic fertilizer, husks, sawdust, NPK+SP36 fertilizer, and EM4. Cover the soil and let it sit for 7 days until the organic material decomposes.

Add the mixed soil to the paragon and arrange it in layers in a sufficiently moist area.

Dig a little soil in the middle of the PVC pipe, then plant the seeds with the shoots facing upwards. Water them and then fertilize them a week later. After 4.5 months, the onions are usually ready to be harvested.

5. Of the many hydroponic methods, planting garlic in egg trays is the easiest. Garlic plants are guaranteed to be free from pests.

Simply fill the egg cavity with soil that has been given hydroponic nutrients, then place the garlic that has started to grow shoots on top. Because the planting medium is more humid, it is better not to water the garlic immediately. After the planting process, let it sit for 3 days then water it every two days. For the harvest period, the time is the same as other hydroponic methods.

6. Planting garlic in rice fields is commonly done by farmers who have land around the highlands.

This method is generally used as one way of cultivating or planting garlic which is intended to be sold. The way to plant it is similar to the pot or polybag planting method but because it is in a large area, you have to loosen the soil first.

The process of planting garlic can be done by burying the shoots. Well, so that the roots of the shoots do not collide with each other, give a distance of about 10 cm for each planting. Fertilization can be done three times, namely during the planting period, shoot formation, and bulb formation. For the dose of non-organic fertilizer, use 200 kg N, 180 kg P2O5, 60 kg K20, and 142 kg S per hectare of land.

To give you an idea, here is a video clip on how to plant garlic that can be used as a reference.

How, is it easy to grow garlic at home? Try growing your garlic once in a while, so that it can be harvested and used as a kitchen spice. Maybe it can be a business field too, right?
