Was Manchester United's Season Successful?

Manchester United Season Review

When Jose Mourinho took over Manchester United, there was a sense of optimism, and it made sense. Jose is a man with a winning mentality, and has demonstrated it through his time with the likes of Porto, Chelsea, inter Milan, and Real Madrid.

However, things didn't go so well in the 2018-2019 season, despite finishing second the previous season. The team did not live up to the high expectation of challenging their noisy neighbors, Manchester City, for the title, because of the lack of consistency. They also did not perform well, because the manager probably lost the backing of the dressing room, and probably because of his treatment towards the likes of Martial. The manager, and probably the club's most expensive signing, Paul Pogba, did not have the best relationship, so that might have also determined Jose's faith, because he also failed to get the best out of the record signing. We probably won’t ever know if Manchester United would have improved under Jose despite many debates and assumptions. However, their loss against Liverpool was the final nail in the coffin.

The club eventually fired Jose because results weren't going their way, and they hired Ole Solskjaer, a former player and legend on an interim basis. The team immediately went on a run of good results, and even probably surprised a lot of people by beating PSG in the Champions League round of 16. After the win against PSG, the club appointed Ole as the permanent manager for three years, and things went south after he was appointed. A lot of it could be because the team did not get over their big win over PSG, and they probably were complacent. Several players like the likes of De Gea did not perform well in games against Barcelona and Chelsea where he made shocking mistakes. The team didn’t even show up to play against Everton where they were humiliated, and probably killed their changes of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the champion league. De Gea has been one of the top performances at the club for almost a decade, and it is disappointing to see the drop in form. However, I do believe that he will rediscover his best form, whether or not he stays at Manchester United. I hope he renews his contract, rediscovers his form, and helps the club to win many trophies in the future.

In addition, there are uncertainties regarding the future of several players like Sanchez, Rojo, and Darmin. These players failed to perform when given the opportunity. Sanchez and Rojo both struggled with injuries this year, but a player of Sanchez's caliber failed to impress since his big move from Arsenal, and it would make sense for the player and club to part ways. Pogba and Ander Herrera are also other players linked with a move away from the club this summer. Pogba is consistently link with a move to Real Madrid, and he doesn’t seem like he is doing his best to reassure the fans and the club that he will stay at Manchester United. On the other hand, Herrera is linked with a move to PSG according to multiple reports. I think the club should do their best to keep a hold of these players, best they are exceptional football players, and can take them to the next level.

I think Manchester United's current season is a fiasco, because they did not perform on a consistent basis, did not win any silverware, and might not be a success if they fail to win their remaining two games but hope results go their way.
