Liverpool v Real Madrid 1981

Liverpool will face Real Madrid in the Champions League Final in Paris. Back in 1981 the sides met at the Parc Des Princes in the European Cup Final (the predecessor to the Champions League). In this retro match report look back at how that game went.

Liverpool continued England's dominance of the European Cup with a 1-0 win over Real Madrid in Paris. Left back Allan Kennedy's goal the only of a tense Final of contrasting styles. Madrid using slow build up play with bursts of speed while Liverpool used their procession based attacking play.

The Red's win is the fifth in a row for English clubs with Liverpool lifting their third. Liverpool add the European Cup to the League Cup to complete a cup double. By lifting the trophy Liverpool will qualify for next years European Cup as holders.

In front of over 48,000 fans in Parc Des Princes Alan Kennedy's goal after 82 minutes was enough for the English side. La Liga runners-up Madrid miss out on taking a record sixth title to Bob Paisleys side.

The match was tense and cagey with both sides coming in after long seasons domestically. In the build up to the game The Guardian's David Lacey wrote in his match preview that the final would likely resemble a game of chess.

Liverpool created the games first real chance with Allan Kennedy's long range effort needing turning around the post by Real keeper Agustín. Kennedy's shot an early warning sign for the Spanish side.

From a free kick Graeme Souness found Allan Hansen in the Madrid box. Hansen's cushioned header found follow Scot Kenny Dalglish, on the turn Dalglish hit a shot straight at Agustín.

Madrid captain Santillina saw his header hit the side netting after a flick on from Cortes. Ray Clemence happy to allow it to go wide of his goal.

Liverpool came forward again with Phil Neal playing the ball to Dalglish just inside the box. Dalglish made a lay off the charging forward Souness. Firing a low first time shot at Agustín which saw the keeper spill the ball. Agustín managed to recover before Souness could reach the lose ball.

Half Time: Liverpool 0-0 Real Madrid

Madrid worked the ball though the middle and sent Jose Antonio Camacho though on goal. With Ray Clemence barring down, Camacho went for a lob but put his effort over the bar.

With Madrid dropping deep Souness set up Sammy Lee who struck a first time shot from range. His effort was to direct and easy for Agustín.

With nine minutes remaining however Liverpool broke the deadlock. Ray Kennedy with a throw deep into Madrid's half found namesake Allan. The quick run from Allan Kennedy catching the Madrid defence cold footed. Advancing into the box past Cortes he smashed the ball into the net and ran to celebrate in front of the Liverpool supporters.

The Reds could have put the game to bed when Dalglish made a run down the left. Sending a cross into the box Agustín went to catch but lost the ball. Neal tapped the ball to Souness with fired at goal but produced a fine save from the keeper.
