CLUB UNDER JORGE COSTA

The Islanders made the announcement about their new head coach following the declaration that Mumbai City FC had parted ways with Guimares. For the 2018–19 Indian Super League season, former Portugal international and Champions League victor Jorge Costa has been named Mumbai City FC's manager. Along with several foreign players like Modou Sougou, Rafael Bastos, Arnold Issoko, and Paulo Machado, the team also signed internationals from India, Alen Deory and Subhasish Bose.

The 2019 Hero Super Cup was the next job for Jorge Costa and his team, with the Islanders being drawn to play Chennaiyin FC in the Round of 16 on March 29 at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar. Lucian Goian is the sole foreign player on Costa's squad, which is virtually entirely made up of Indian players. Mohammed Kaif and Nakul Shelke, two highly regarded kids from Costa's youth divisions, were also promoted. The team got off to a strong start but failed to take advantage of the opportunities that were presented, losing 2-0 and being ousted from the Super Cup.Mato Grgic, Serge Kevyn, Amine Chermiti, Diego Carlos, and Mohamed Larbi were all signed by MCFC after the club announced that club captain Lucian Goian would be leaving for Chennaiyin FC prior to the 2019–20 season. The 2019–20 season began with a 1-0 victory over Kerala Blasters. Mumbai City FC's parent business, City Football Group EPL Giants Manchester City, purchased a major share in the team on November 28, 2019. For the first time, a premier European club bought the majority of a club in India. There were ups and downs for Jorge Costa's club, but MCFC's successful run was hampered by injuries to the team's core players. They ultimately missed the final playoff spot by just three points as a result of losing with Chennaiyin FC .

Looking back at the stats, the Islanders had scored 25 goals as a team with 12 different players on the scoresheet, which set a record. Mumbai City under Costa was known for having a strong defence and being deadly on the counterattack. The squad didn't lose against Bengaluru FC during the two years that Costa was in charge, becoming the first in ISL history to perform a league double over them. Jorge Costa's tenure at the club came to an end after placing fifth and the complete implementation of City Football Group ownership.

SERGIO LOBERA MASTERMIND CHANGE THE MUMBAI CITY FC FORTUNES

The team was fully acquired by the City Football Group after several months of expectation. Sergio Lobera, a former FC Goa coach, was hired as the club's manager to usher in a new era under the new ownership. After paying Hugo Boumous' release clause of 1.6 crores, a record sum in Indian football, the club acquired him from FC Goa. They also signed core Goa players Fall, Jahou, Mandar Rao, and Jackichand in addition to Boumous.

Mumbai City FC earned 25 points from the first 10 games of the league, which comprised eight victories, one tie, and one defeat. Only two victories in six games were gained towards the end of the league stage.

Mumbai City FC became the first team to win the ISL trophy and league winners shield in the same season as a result.

UNDER DES

Mumbai City hired English manager Des Buckingham as head coach on a two-year deal on October 8, 2021. On November 22, the team defeated FC Goa 3-0 to start the 2021–22 season.Mumbai City overcame Iraq's Al-Quwa Al-Jawiya by a score of 2-1 to become the first Indian side to triumph in an AFC Champions League match under Buckingham. On January 4th, 2023, Mumbai made it to the Durand Cup final for the first time on the strength of their historic champions league run and narrowly lost to Bengaluru FC by a score of 2-1.

DES SUCCESS WITH MUMBAI CITY FC

In that season, they set records for most points (46), most victories (14), fewest losses (2), most goals (54), highest Goal Differential (33), most successful passes (9047), and longest unbeaten streak (18 matches) in the history of the ISL.
