Italy’s World Cup Rollercoaster: From Four Titles to Historic Misses
Italy's Record in the FIFA World Cup
Italy's soccer team, or the Azzuri, has had some of the World Cup's best teams. Since the 1930s, the Azzuri have won nuermous World Cups and so have one of the best records in the World Cup overall.
Italy first played in the early World Cups of the 1930s. Indeed, they became the first European team to win the World Cup in 1934. Here, with a 2-1 win over Czechoslovakia, to win their first World Cup.
In 1938, Italy hosted the World Cup. With home advantage, the Italians had an 'advantage' and were able to reach another final. Here, they played Hungary in the final and were able to win the game 4-2. With this, they were the first team to defend the World Cup trophy.
However, post-war Italy did not have such good teams. In the '54 and '62 World Cups, they could not get beyond the first round. Then, in 1966, this trend continued as the Italian team ducked out of the World Cup early, losing to the Koreans.
Italy won the European Championship in 1968. With this, it seemed that the Italian national team was back, and once again able to challenge for the World Cup, once more with players such as Rivera and Riva in their team. The 1970 World Cup was a good opportunity for Italy to progress in the World Cup, and they were indeed able to go beyond the group stages and further when they played Germany in the semi-finals. In this classic game, the Italians won 4-3 overall to make it to the World Cup final. However, Brazil were too good and ran out 4-1 winners in the final.
In 1978, Italy would also reach the later stages of the World Cup. An exciting generation of Italian football players, such as Rossi and Dino Zoff, spearheaded the team. As such, they finished in fourth place overall.
For the 1982 World Cup in Spain, Italy's team was ready for another attempt at winning the World Cup. With the introduction of Rossi, the team gradually found top form and, in the second round, were able to beat Brazil 3- 2 overall. As such, Italy progressed to the semi-finals, where they beat Poland 2-0 to set up a final against Germany. In this game, Rossi scored again to set up a 3-1 final victory over Germany as Italy won a third World Cup.
In 1986, Italy was not able to defend its title. For the 1990 World Cup, they hosted the event, and as such were amongst the favourites to win it. Italy progressed, but lost to Argentina in the semi-finals. In the third-round play-off, they beat England 2-1 to finish third overall.
In 1994, Italy had some very good players. Baggio was one player who could potentially win games. In the World Cup, Italy was able to reach the final of the World Cup, with a score of 2-1. Then, in the final, they played Brazil, where the game remained without a goal. With a penalty shoot-out, Italy lost the final after a missed penalty by Baggio.
Further World Cups for Italy were somewhat disappointing. However, in 2006, this trend would change. With some top-class defenders, Italy made it to the final with a 2-0 win over the hosts Germany in the semi-final. Then, against France, they won the World Cup on penalties with a 1-1 draw in the final.
Italy has been abysmal in the FIFA World Cup since then. The Italians twice crashed out in the first round stages of the South Africa and Brazil World Cups. Italy hasn’t qualified for any of the last three World Cups, including the 2026 tournament.
As such, Italy has won the World Cup four times overall. This is second only to Brazil and the record for a European team. So Italy has had some great teams and players in the World Cup.
