Celtic blank Queen's death but Rangers take tributes too far

Glasgow's 'Old Firm' tend not to agree on a lot of issues

Glasgow's two most popular football clubs don't tend to agree on much and the rivalry is famous for taking opposing view points on just about every issue under the sun, including religion, politics, music, Scottish independence, Irish reunification, Brexit, Palestine/Israel and every other issue of the day you could imagine.

Even the name the derby has been known as for over 100 years 'the Old Firm' is debated amongst the younger generations with Celtic fans rejecting the term and believing the term is defunct following the liquidation of Rangers in 2012.

Even during the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 several videos showed Celtic fans supporting the protests while Rangers fans were at counter protests waving union jack flags and 'protecting statues'.

One main point of contention for fans of the two Scottish Premiership is obviously the British monarchy with the blue side seeing themselves as the Quintessential British establishment club and loyal subjects to the crown with the green side showing a more rebellious side to reject the crown and British establishment at every turn.

And that has never been clearer than in the past couple of days following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

As every other club in the UK posted a simple picture and tribute to mark the death, Celtic and Rangers have predictably taken completely opposite directions and taken it to the extremes.

Celtic are the only professional football club based in the United Kingdom who haven't posted any kind of tribute or even mentioned the death to any of their millions of followers on social media.

Despite a 24 word statement marking the death being published on to their website late on Thursday night, it was never posted to their Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or TikTok accounts.

They are also the only club that could be considered a "one of the biggest clubs in Britain" that never turned their profile pics black.

Even a post confirming that their home match against Livingston this weekend had been postponed failed to mention the reason why, but still the majority of the fans who commented let their feelings be known that there was no love lost.

Celtic Ultras Group The Green Brigade posted a celebration video just minutes after the Queen's death was announced and then they also claimed responsibility for f**k the Queen graffiti that appeared in Glasgow overnight.

Rangers on the other hand have gone into overkill with the issue and had the complete opposite reaction to their rivals.

Their official club social media accounts have posted no less than 12 times about the Queen since her death, two official club statements, they changed their profile picture, changed their cover picture, had a training ground minute silence, put their flags at half-mast, asked for their Champions League game be postponed, used words and phrases like “cognisant” “her majesty” “deeply saddened” “exceptionally difficult” and “gravely missed”, fans have painted pubs, created murals from newspaper front pages and are walking around Ibrox wearing home made black armbands.

Yes you read that correctly, Rangers fans were actually walking around Glasgow with home made black armbands.

A minute silence was held at the training ground and directors paid tribute by laying a wreath outside the stadium at their John Greig statue.

No matter your view on this matter you really have to respect the dedication to the rivalry from the two most successful clubs in Scottish football.

Sport has many great rivalries, but none that come close to the history, pettiness, hatred, dislike and opposite views as Glasgow Celtic Football Club and Glasgow Rangers Football Club and that is why they will always be the benchmark.
