Best Football Players of 2026 - My Team of the Year XI
My pick of the best footballers of 2026 season, featuring Kane, Mbappé, Yamal, Rodri and more ...

There have been some incredible individual performances, major trophies, and plenty of players who deserve recognition during the 2026 football season. For my 2026 Team of the Year, I have gone with a 4-3-3 formation. I wanted a proper football team, not just eleven famous names thrown together.
I have considered performances throughout the year, consistency, individual awards, major competitions, and how each player would fit into the lineup. Here is my personal selection of the best football players of 2026, as of October.
Goalkeeper: Unai Simón (Spain)
Unai Simón gets my vote in goal. His performances during Spain's 2026 World Cup campaign were outstanding. He won the Golden Glove after keeping seven clean sheets in eight matches, helping Spain lift the trophy.
What I particularly like about Simón is his composure. He's comfortable with the ball, reads situations well, and doesn't seem bothered by pressure. David Raya deserves a mention too, but Simón's World Cup performances give him the edge for me.
Right-Back: Achraf Hakimi (PSG)
Hakimi is still one of my favourite attacking full-backs. He's ridiculously quick, constantly looks for space, and can turn defence into attack in seconds.
What makes him special isn't just his speed. It's the way he combines with teammates and creates problems for defenders who are already busy watching the winger.
He finished 13th in the 2026 Ballon d'Or voting, which says plenty about how highly his performances were rated. For my team, he's an easy choice at right-back.
Centre-Back: Pau Cubarsí (Barcelona)
It's hard to believe how young Cubarsí is when you watch him play.
He's calm in possession, rarely seems rushed, and has the confidence to play difficult passes out from the back.
Winning the Best Young Player award at the 2026 World Cup was another huge achievement.
I particularly like defenders who can actually start attacks rather than just clear the ball whenever they're under pressure. Cubarsí gives my back four exactly that.
Centre-Back: Gabriel Magalhães (Arsenal)
Alongside Cubarsí, I would pick Gabriel too. He is strong, aggressive when necessary, excellent in the air, and isn't afraid of a physical battle.
Gabriel was selected in both the 2025/26 Champions League Team of the Season and the 2026 PFA Premier League Team of the Year.
I think he'd be an ideal partner for Cubarsí. One brings calmness and passing quality, while the other provides strength and defensive presence.
Left-Back: Nuno Mendes (PSG)
Nuno Mendes gets my left-back spot. He's fast enough to recover against dangerous wingers and confident enough to attack when there's space ahead.
His contribution to PSG's Champions League-winning campaign also deserves recognition. I like full-backs who can offer something at both ends of the pitch, and Mendes certainly fits that description.
With him on the left and Hakimi on the right, this team would have plenty of attacking width.

Defensive Midfielder: Rodri (Spain)
Rodri is the player I'd build my midfield around. He won the Golden Ball at the 2026 World Cup after helping Spain become world champions.
His greatest strength isn't something you'll always notice in highlight videos. It is his positioning, decision-making, and ability to control the pace of a match.
He knows when to slow things down, when to move the ball quickly, and where to stand when his team loses possession. For me, he's still one of the best examples of how important a defensive midfielder can be.
Central Midfielder: Declan Rice (Arsenal)
Rice would be my box-to-box midfielder. He covers so much ground, wins important challenges, and helps his team move forward without leaving the defence exposed.
His inclusion in both UEFA's Champions League Team of the Season and the PFA Premier League Team of the Year reflects how consistent he's been.
I also think he'd work brilliantly alongside Rodri. Rodri could control the deeper areas while Rice presses opponents and makes forward runs. Not every midfielder needs to score twenty goals to be world-class.
Central Midfielder: Vitinha (PSG)
My third midfielder is Vitinha. He's one of those players who makes football look simple, even when the game is moving at full speed.
His passing, movement, and ability to escape pressure are excellent. He was also named Player of the Match in the 2026 Champions League final.
I love watching midfielders who don't waste touches. Vitinha always seems to know where his next pass is going. With Rodri and Rice beside him, he'd have the freedom to create and connect the midfield with the attack.
Left Winger: Kylian Mbappé (Real Madrid)
I couldn't leave Mbappé out. Scoring ten goals at the 2026 World Cup is an incredible achievement, and he deservedly won the Golden Boot.
He also finished second in the 2026 Ballon d'Or voting. Although he's dangerous through the middle, I'd use him on the left wing in this lineup. His acceleration, finishing, and movement behind defenders would be a nightmare for any right-back.
And with Kane playing centrally, Mbappé would have someone capable of finding his runs with clever passes.
Striker: Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)
Harry Kane is my striker and my best footballer of 2026. Winning the 2026 Ballon d'Or after scoring 73 goals for club and country during the 2025/26 campaign is a pretty convincing argument.
He also scored 14 goals in the Champions League and helped Bayern Munich win a domestic treble.
But I wouldn't pick Kane just for his goals. His passing is outstanding for a striker. He can drop deeper, link up with midfielders, and create space for attacking teammates. With Mbappé and Yamal either side of him, I think Kane would be the perfect centre-forward.
Right Winger: Lamine Yamal (Barcelona)
Lamine Yamal completes my front three. He's already one of the most entertaining players in football, and his third-place finish in the 2026 Ballon d'Or shows how far he's come.
What I enjoy most about watching Yamal is his confidence. He'll take on defenders, try difficult passes, and look for creative solutions even when there's very little space.
He's not just a quick winger. His close control and understanding of the game make him incredibly difficult to defend against. I would give him freedom on the right to cut inside, create chances, and combine with Kane.

My 2026 Team of the Year – Starting XI
Formation: 4-3-3
GK: Unai Simón
RB: Achraf Hakimi
CB: Pau Cubarsí
CB: Gabriel Magalhães
LB: Nuno Mendes
CDM: Rodri
CM: Declan Rice
CM: Vitinha
RW: Lamine Yamal
ST: Harry Kane
LW: Kylian Mbappé
Players I Nearly Picked
Leaving out some of these names was genuinely difficult. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia has a particularly strong case after winning the 2025/26 Champions League Player of the Season award with PSG.
Lionel Messi also deserves recognition for his performances at the World Cup, where he won the Silver Ball and scored eight goals. Then there's Bruno Fernandes, who won the 2026 PFA Players' Player of the Year award. I seriously considered putting him in midfield.
Erling Haaland, Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise, David Raya, and Marquinhos are other players I considered. On another day, I might change one or two positions. That's the difficult part of choosing a Team of the Year.
Who Is My Best Football Player of 2026?
For me, it is of course Harry Kane! Rodri's World Cup performances were exceptional, Mbappé had an unbelievable tournament, and Yamal continues to amaze me.
But Kane's goalscoring record, overall contribution, and Ballon d'Or victory make him my number one. Of course, football opinions are never going to be unanimous. Someone else could easily pick Rodri, Mbappé, or another player and make a convincing argument.
This is simply my personal Team of the Year based on what I've seen and the achievements recorded through October 2026.
Who would you change in this starting eleven?
