5 records Cristiano Ronaldo could break with Portugal at Euro 2024

The Portuguese legend, who turned 39 in February, is no stranger to breaking records of that magnitude and there are plenty more potentially on their way. Ronaldo continues to captain Portugal, who are managed by ex- Belgium boss Roberto Martinez and enjoyed a formidable qualifying campaign in which their talisman scored 10 goals in just nine appearances.

The UEFA Euro 2024 is around the corner with hosts Germany scheduled to take on Scotland at the Allianz Arena on Friday night. Ahead of the European championship, the 2016 winners, Portugal received a major boost with their star forward Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a brace against Ireland in a 3-0 win in their final warm-up game on Tuesday.

Roberto Martinez's side are placed in Group F alongside Turkey, the Czech Republic, and Georgia, which many believed is the easiest group for one of the tournament favourites. Ahead of stepping into his sixth European championship, Ronaldo already has many records under his belt in the UEFA Euros including the all-time leading goal-scorer, most matches played, scoring in five editions.

However, there are some milestones and achievements that the Portuguese legend would aim to conquer in the Euro 2024. In this article, we will look at the records that the 39-year-old Ronaldo could break with Portugal in the Euro 2024.

1. 900 Goals

Cristiano Ronaldo is already the leading goal scorer in Euros with 14 goals, having two goals in 2004, one in 2008, three each in 2012 and 2016, and five goals in 2021. In his career, the 39-year-old has 130 international goals and 855 goals across all competitions. Cristiano can extend his all-time leading goal scorer award as he is just five goals shy of reaching a milestone of 900 career goals.

2. Most Assists

Apart from his goal-scoring, Ronaldo can break the record for the most assists in Euros history. The five-time Ballon d'Or winner has seven assists to his name and is currently one behind another former Czech star, Karel Poborsky. Poborsky, who also played for Manchester United, racked up a total of eight assists across three tournaments and the Portuguese captain is just one goal away from equaling his record.

3. Oldest Scorer

In the Euro 2021, Ronaldo scored five goals and made one assist to win the Golden Boot over Czech Republic forward Patrik Schick, who had five goals. Before getting eliminated in the Round of 16 with a 1-0 score against Belgium, Ronaldo scored a brace against France in the group stage at the age of 36. In the Euro 2024, the 39-year-old has a chance to break the oldest goal-scorer record set in 2008 by Austria's Ivica Vastic, who was 38 years, and 257 days old when he scored in a 1-1 draw against Poland.

4. 2nd Captain to win two Euro titles

Spain's legendary goalkeeper and Ronaldo's former Real Madrid teammate, Iker Casillas has led La Roja to two successive Euro championships in 2008 and 2012. Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who led the team to their maiden title victory in 2016, has a chance to level Casillas as the only two captains to win the Euro title twice. However, there are a total of 13 players who have already won the European championships twice.

5. Chances Created

While Cristiano leads the all-time goal-scoring list and requires one more assist to join Poborsky at the top, the Al-Nassr captain would be in contention to break the record for most chances created in Euros. Since 1980, the record for most chances created is held by Portugal and Real Madrid legend, but not Ronaldo, as Luis Figo is at the top with 42 chances created. His compatriot Ronaldo is only one behind at 41, followed by Germany's Mesut Ozil at 40, Karel Poborsky of the Czech Republic at 39, and France legend Zinedine Zidane at 38.
