The Unwelcome Visitor
There’s another package. Isla MacGregor exits the elevator to her waterfront condo’s front door. The innocent brown package sat waiting just like the other ones had.

For those who are unaware or have never counted them, Vocal has 48 communities available for writers to post their work in. The most popular of these by far are Poetry with 40,097 writers and Fiction with 31,637 writers. These numbers come from Vocal’s website and I’m sure they fluctuate from week to week, possibly day to day. These two groups generate most stories published on the site. What I found fascinating is how many Top Stories these two communities garner in a thirty-day period.

“You’re back.” Dr. Patterson seemed cheered by my arrival. She sat in her usual seat, which looked less the seat of a clinician than it did a parent’s familiar armchair.

So many red flags, yet Peter ignored them all. There was a yellow symbol glowing brightly on the dashboard. The weather forecaster implored people to prepare for an imminent storm. A “No Trespassing” sign bearing skull and crossbones symbols guarding the entrance. Everything seemed trivial until it was too late to avoid his current predicament.

Knock Christine shot up, a flat sheet falling down to reveal her bare breasts. She didn’t move. ‘Just the house settling….’
There's One for All
Prologue; Struggling for several months to find proof the pictures that broke her heart were a lie, and needing the distraction, Robert jumped at the opportunity when offered the trip to China. He welcomed the attention to detail required to get the job done on time; as his mind would be full with their planned, unrealistic, work schedule, instead of the constant reminders of the pain he felt from losing the woman that had held his heart since they were teenagers.

The forest path was uneven. He felt every rise and divot in the earth, every loose stone that twisted under his boot. With every step, his leg complained with a bright pinch of pain as if to remind him that he was - in fact - broken. He couldn’t decide which was worse, the walk to the cabin that he was now forced to call home, or the wagon ride through Wolf’s Pass; a jostling, hellish ordeal over the border that made him question his sanity. At least in the wagon he still had his brothers with him.

“Ostend te,” I whisper. The wall has vanished and in its place, a winding stairway appears. Faint light lines the walls as candles flicker. The stone walls feel slick and cold as the wall guides me down the stairs. I follow down the steps as mice scurry past my feet. Warmth hits me before anything. The fire that warms the cauldron is strong tonight. Mine and my sister’s magic has become even more powerful from the drought.

It's highly recommended that you re-read Chapter 4 by Matthew Fromm as major plot points will be referring back to the content in that chapter.

Black clouds had receded and were banking sedately in an overcast but peaceful sky, far off by the misty line of wold which marked the horizon. Joe had seen the dome of a dazzling morning soar so high over these flat fens as to awe the observer with a sense of distance, but in this still afternoon hour the mood was more of a reassuring nearness. The heavens all but touched the tops of the telegraph poles, and those lopsided old wooden uprights were themselves not such a way from the verge. Birds were beginning to sit at rest along the wires that dipped between. Our hero, having been reading this land since infancy, knew the earliest signs of day drawing to a close.

I speak to no one about my encounter with Bill... at least, not until we stop at an intergalactic space fuel station for some intergalactic space fuel station slushies and some intergalactic space fuel station fast food. Sans insists that we sit inside for the fast food instead of speeding off onto the highway again, claiming that he needs some "chill time" after spending two hours in the car with two jumpy teenage girls, and so Star and I sit ourselves down in one of the vibrant pink booths and wait for Sans to finish ordering our food.
