Trinkets and lessons

By Katherine Aguilar

This chapter explores how my understanding of faith can go wrong, highlighting the importance of self-awareness in personal growth.

Unscrambling the egg

Trying to do the impossible, like unscrambling an egg, teaches us that we can't fix everything, but we can choose to move forward positively.

Stop doing wrong, even if it takes you one step at a time. It is still moving you in the right direction in your life. Just like my writing, I have picked up the pace. I know it sounds strange to use an omelet as an example. It is just the food items I have mentioned over the years. I am sure you can if in your own item. To work on yourself to improve or to share it with others. Teaching from your faith is a way to see the positive impact you can have on someone. By teaching, so others will not make the same mistakes.

We all have our mistakes, but I am committed to staying on track and embracing the ongoing journey of personal growth with hope.

If you read my writing and it doesn’t make sense, check the manual to be sure. It has been here longer than I have been. I am in my fifties. Remember, I am just getting myself going in the right direction. That is why I am sharing. I am sharing my trinkets not just with you but with myself as well. I trashed the bad trinkets and shared the good trinkets with you.

Writing allows me to free my thoughts to make better choices.

Do you decide how you want your life to be?

Remember the kind of brick you want for your house.

Disrespect

How many people do you know who show disrespect to you? Still, they are your friend. When you are hungry and sick, they come to you. Everyone seems to do it. I will include myself in the lot. I have found myself getting irritated at someone and giving them some choice words. It is not as if I go around with a big, happy smile on my face all day long. There are times I have to give myself a time-out. I always felt bad afterward. I remind myself. Hey, that wasn’t right. I know I have mentioned this in a previous chapter. I can say it again because it is an important trinket.

Be respectful of others. I will tell them, “How you treat others is how you will be treated.” Then I think to myself. I am just as bad as everyone else. I had to reflect and think. Wait a minute. Check yourself before you go giving someone advice. Let me be the first student, as I have been. That is part of removing the bad trinkets: using the good ones I have, or adding more good ones.

Purple dress

This story goes back to Florida. I do believe I mentioned I was a waitress at an Italian restaurant. One of my friends was Carol. She was a nice lady. I believe she was from New York, or she had a New Yorken accent. I was fresh from Texas. She, too, was a waitress. She was also into restate. She lived with her brother in a duplex that had a swimming pool. I would go and hang out with her and her brother since the duplex had a swimming pool. We would relax and talk, and she would tell me about her life. It was as if a mother were talking to a daughter. We were friends all through college. For graduation, she had made me a purple dress. I was so moved by her making this dress for me. It was purple. Since no one had ever done something so kind for me, it moved me so much that I kept that dress for a very long time, until it burned up when the fire destroyed the apartment. It was a very simple dress. It was the gesture of kindness and time that she took to make the dress that moved me. She thought of me that much to spend that much time making it.

Never underestimate small acts of kindness, as they can have enormous, positive effects on someone else's life.

When she gave it to me, I felt a mother's love.
