The Painted Bride: Snow White’s Forgotten Twin

There were two coffins, but only one mirror.

In Bavaria, the legend of Schneewittchen is older than the Grimm brothers. Local records from Lohr am Main mention two sisters — one with skin like snow, the other with skin “red as clay.”

The “fairest one” was not the true heir; she was the experiment. Their mother, a glassblower’s wife, discovered that human blood mixed with mercury created a reflective surface.

She built the mirror to hold her beauty forever — but mirrors require balance. One child reflected the other.

When the queen died, one twin vanished. Snow White’s stepmother only tried to destroy her because she recognized her own handiwork.

In 1937, during renovations of the Spessart Castle, workers found a sealed chamber behind an old mirror. Inside: a mummified girl in a red dress, her hands stained with silver.

On the wall, scrawled in iron oxide, read one phrase:

“Let her be the fairest now.”
