The Letter Under the Floor

While renovating my house, I discovered a loose floorboard.

Underneath it was an envelope.

On the front were six words:

"To whoever finds this letter."

Inside was a handwritten message.

The writer explained that he had built the house himself.

He had lived there with his wife and two children.

Then tragedy struck.

His wife died unexpectedly.

His children moved away.

He became old and eventually sold the house.

Before leaving, he hid the letter.

He wrote:

"If you're reading this, then this house has a new family."

Then came the part that surprised me.

He asked the future owner to do one thing.

"Don't wait until tomorrow to tell people you love them."

I thought it was sentimental.

Until I discovered the date.

The letter had been written the day before his wife died.

He had no idea what was coming.

I kept the letter.

And I followed his advice.

Because sometimes the most important messages are written by people who don't realize how much their words will matter.
