Part 2

Dev repeated to himself, “control, adaptability, tactical judgment, and restraint, this is perfect” he immediately began weaving spells, out of the options of wind conditions. It sounds like making them leave the designated area will earn the most points since we’re not being judged on hurting the other, but controlling the fight… Dev prepared a series of concentrated wind balls around him preparing and then sent one forward aiming for Cassians center of gravity.

BOOM.

Air exploded outward.

Cassian’s footing shifted violently.

He immediately reinforced his legs with mana, sliding backward several meters rather than being thrown from the arena.

A murmur rose from the spectators.

Master Thorne’s eyes narrowed with interest.

“Good.”

Cassian looked toward Dev.

Then at the remaining wind spheres hovering around him.

His expression hardened.

“So that’s how you’re fighting.”

Mana surged through the conductive bands around his arms.

The ground beneath Cassian cracked.

A wave of earth erupted upward between them, forming a jagged stone wall.

The next wind sphere struck it.

CRACK.

Stone fractured.

Cassian didn’t wait.

He swept one hand sideways.

Three compressed blades of earth tore through the broken wall, traveling low across the arena.

Not toward Dev’s body.

Toward his feet.

At the same time, Cassian began advancing.

He wasn’t trying to overpower Dev.

He had recognized the objective.

He was trying to restrict Dev’s movement and force him toward the edge.

Master Thorne watched silently.

“Adaptability,” she murmured.

The next exchange would determine whether either student had actually understood the purpose of the exercise.

Cassian raised both hands.

The stone beneath Dev’s position began shifting.

Not an attack.

A trap.

The arena floor itself was becoming unstable.

Twisting his back foot, the Earth beneath Dev shot up, propelling him forward into the air. Letting one of the compressed air balls explode behind and propel him to close the distance between them. Dev landed atop the wall cassian summoned

As the final three compressed wind blasts shot forward exploding in succession,  the first by cassians feet knocking him up into the air,  the next at his solar plexus to propelling him backwards towards the edge of the arena, and the final one erupted before him trying to throw cassian out of the arena.

The first wind blast detonated beneath Cassian’s feet.

WHUMP.

His earth reinforcement kept him from being injured, but it couldn’t prevent the sudden loss of footing. Cassian was launched upward.

His eyes widened.

The second blast struck his center mass.

BOOM.

Cassian was hurled backward.

He twisted in midair, trying to redirect himself with earth magic, but the timing was too tight. The arena’s boundary was already rushing toward him.

Then the final compressed sphere erupted directly in his path.

BOOM!

The blast caught him squarely.

Cassian flew backward—

—and crossed the boundary.

The protective array flashed brilliantly.

A resonant tone rang throughout the arena.

MATCH TERMINATED.

For a moment, the entire training ground was silent.

Cassian landed outside the designated area, rolling once before coming to a stop.

He wasn’t injured.

Just stunned.

Master Thorne lowered her hand.

“Victory: Dev of Alderhollow.”

The protective barrier faded.

A wave of whispers erupted through the stands.

Dev’s strategy had been brutally simple once understood: don’t overpower Cassian, don’t try to hurt him, and don’t give him time to establish control.

Three carefully positioned bursts had accomplished what a much more powerful attack might not have.

Master Thorne looked toward Dev.

“Excellent tactical judgment.”

She gestured toward the point where Cassian had crossed the boundary.

“You identified the actual victory condition and built your entire strategy around it.”

Then she looked toward Cassian.

“And you made the mistake of treating your opponent’s lower core as an invitation to underestimate him.”

Cassian slowly stood.

His face had gone rigid.

Master Thorne continued.

“Both of you demonstrated adaptability.”

Her gaze settled on Dev.

“But there is one thing I want everyone here to remember.”

She addressed the entire arena.

“A stronger core does not make poor tactics disappear.”

The students fell silent.

“Nor does superior equipment.”

Her eyes briefly passed over Cassian’s enchanted bands.

“Nor talent.”

She turned back toward Dev.

“A mage wins by making the best use of what they possess.”

Cassian retrieved his cloak from the attendant.

As he passed Dev, he stopped.

For several seconds he said nothing.

Then, quietly:

“That wasn’t luck.”

His eyes hardened.

“Next time, I’ll be ready.”

He continued walking.

From the spectator stands, Elira was already grinning.

She gave Dev an enthusiastic thumbs-up.

Master Thorne called for the next pair.

But the atmosphere had changed.

Everyone had just watched the academy’s promising Level Three village student defeat one of its highborn heirs without landing a single conventional attack.

And now every first-year knew his name.
