The chandrayan-3 Mission

Significance of Chandrayan-3 mission

By Lizamma John Published 10 months ago 1 min read

No country has ever landed on the south pole of the Moon. That is what India is going to attempt. It is important to know why India chose the South Pole for landing. If Chandrayan-3 will succeed in a soft- landing on the South Pole, India will be the first country to achieve this goal and a new chapter begins in India’s moon research. Million people are praying for the mission to be a success. The Vikram lander is getting ready to land in the South Pole, and it is a very difficult task. The south pole of the moon’s rugged terrain lies in the shade of utter darkness and very low temperatures. This is where researchers previously discovered the presence of frozen water.

Chandrayan-3’s successful landing will give advanced pieces of information on the water on the moon, one of the most valuable resources. Scientists are eager to find water pockets because they can provide the records of materials that comets and asteroids delivered to Earth. Moreover, the origins of oceans. If frozen water exists in large quantities, it could be a source of drinking water for researchers and will help to cool the types of equipment used for the exploration. Water ice could be broken down into hydrogen and oxygen and thus support the mission.

Attempted landing on the moon has failed before. Russia’s Luna-25 spacecraft has been scheduled to land on the South Pole, but it has lost control and crashed. Chandrayan-3 is supposed to land between two craters. The South Pole is with mountains and the terrain gets difficult and dangerous with very big craters. Diminished sunlight and temperature below minus three hundred make the task even more difficult. If everything goes according to the plan, Chandrayan-3 is ready to achieve a historic milestone as the world’s first lunar mission to execute soft-landing to the moon’s South Pole. Let us wait and watch.
