They told me the brown dog only follows the
dying.
It waits at the edges of rooms, where the light
fails,
its fur wet, its eyes too knowing.
It leaves gifts in its trail;
grape juice bottles, old bones, and scraps of
black cloth.
I didn’t believe the stories.
Not until it followed me.
