The Barber Who Found $128,514 and Gave Back Every Dollar
He could've walked away rich. Instead he called the police.
Just after 10 a.m. on August 3, a 37-year-old barber from Lewisville, Texas pulled up to a Bank of America ATM on West Main Street to withdraw some cash. Sitting on top of the machine were two bags.
One held $128,514 in cash plus a bank receipt. The other held 19 checks.
Something on one of the bags pointed to a nearby Chick-fil-A, so he drove both bags over there and tried to return them. The manager said the money wasn't theirs.
He was standing in a restaurant holding someone else's fortune. No one watching. He could've walked out and disappeared. Instead, with Chick-fil-A staff beside him, he called 911.
Police took custody of the bags, counted the cash twice — by hand and with a digital counter — and sealed it all in the property room. The total matched the receipt exactly: $128,514. Not a dollar missing.
Investigators traced it to Bank of America. A Brink's technician had serviced the ATM that morning and accidentally left the bags on top. No crime involved — just a mistake. The bank has recovered everything.
"I've never had a case like this before, ever," Detective Gina Miller said. She'd seen people turn in wallets and IDs. Never $128,000 in cash.
The barber knew what keeping it would've meant — under Texas law, that's a felony theft charge. He understood the stakes and chose honesty anyway.
He asked that his name not be released. He didn't ask for a reward. When police said they wanted to honor him, he agreed — as long as the ceremony stayed private.
Think about what $128,514 means to a working barber. A down payment on a house. Years of car payments. College money. The kind of money that doesn't come around twice.
He gave it all back and asked for nothing — not even his name in the papers.
In a world full of shortcuts, this man had the ultimate one sitting on an ATM. He walked it straight to the police station instead.
