Lucifer’s punishment had far more implications than even he expected. As his first seven children were banished to the Realm of the Living, they introduced their beings… their concepts into all of existence.
Pride walked through the Gates of Fall.
“You abandoned me, only I care for me.”
Thus the Living began to be able to put their individual selves before their communal selves.
Envy strutted through the Gates of Fall.
“You see yourself as better, not for long.”
Thus the Living began to desire to not only become better than each other but to desire to possess what each other had whether or not they were in need of it or not.
Wrath stomped through the Gates of Fall.
“You will never be forgiven, I refuse to.”
Thus the Living slowly started to build up those feelings of jealousy and ego until they took on a physical action that lingered and stained the soul.
Sloth meandered through the Gate of Fall.
“You don’t care about us, why should I?”
Thus the Living learned to disassociate from both community and self. They eventually started to ignore even the Spirits.
Greed swaggered through the Gates of Fall.
“You underestimated me?! I’ll claim everything you hold dear.”
The Living who couldn’t ignore the Spirits, began to claim their territories and accomplishments for themselves. Believing that the Living would try to claim their gifts and positions, Order entrusted Death and Voyage to make barriers between the Realms. Then between Domains. Then between Worlds. And then between communities.
Gluttony hobbled through the Gates of Fall.
“You have everything and it’s still not enough, in that vein we are the same.”
The Living began to realize that without the Spirits, the resources that were once bountiful were suddenly finite. Resentment was born. Not just for those who had but for those who hoarded and towards the Spirits themselves. The Living began to find ways to hoard the right to live.
And as Lust sashayed towards the Gates of Fall.
“You will never be satisfied and I pity you for it.”
Lucifer snarled. He slammed the gates close, snapping off her left ring finger. Forever lost to her in a world that she could never return.
The Living, in reaction, became overwhelmed with an emptiness. A hollow ache that they were never able to truly understand. Every creation felt these voids. Every creation became familiar with the spiritually, mentally, and physically depleting abilities of the Morningstars.
It was unanimous.
They had been declared the Seven Deadly Sins.
In annoyance, Lucifer continued to look for ways to expand his influence and create the perfect creation. He eventually settled on dividing himself. Giving form to the mental representation of himself that he named Satan, he would rule over the souls that would make their way to the realm. Giving form to the physical representation that he named Temptation, that would serve as his eyes in the Realm of the Living.
Satan created multiple domains within the Underworld. Not looking to get involved in anything outside the realm, Satan decided to never leave. After consuming the portion of Soul that remained in the Underworld, Satan gained full control over any soul that entered his realm weaker than him.
Temptation, on the other hand, didn’t care for anything but enjoying every moment of his existence. To hide from his other selves, Temptation made a habit of taking over the bodies of the Living. Doing whatever he desired.
