If The Fence Won't Hold Water

When I first got into raising goats, I was told, "If your fence won't hold water, it won't hold a goat." In my opinion, that's probably because "the grass is always greener on the other side." When it comes to goats, it's all about food. That's what's always on their minds, with the exception of rut. My big butt goats recently discovered leaning on the fence breaks the welds. Once the welds are broke, they can push through and escape.

I've repaired so much fence this summer that I am out of fence and wire. I've resorted to using hay string to tie pallets over the holes in the fence. Random pallets tied to the fence really adds character to the farm. Seems like someone is always hollering, "The goats are out again."

The little monsters have shredded my herb bed, attacked the roses, and pulled my morning glory plants up by the roots while yanking at the leaves. Queenie, Donkey Boy, and my youngest daughter seem to be the leaders of destruction.

Queenie leads the herd to the herb bed. Donkey Boy introduced the herd to roses and morning glory. My youngest daughter climbs the dogwood tree and shakes the branches to make leaves rain down. The goats eat the leaves up like a person would snack on potato chips.

They've eaten everything but the overgrown brush at the edge of the woods. It doesn't bother me that my daughter runs with a herd of goats. However, at times I wonder, did the goats break the fence again, or did that girl let them out?

The fence needs replaced now. I'm going with woven wire fence this time. I really don't think its necessary for fence to hold water. Well, maybe not...
