The Whispering Shadows
Some reflections are never meant to be seen… and some whispers never truly fade.
It was a cold, moonless night when I moved into my new apartment. The building was old, its wooden floors creaking under my every step. As I unpacked, I noticed a strange, dusty mirror leaning against the wall. Something about it unsettled me.
That night, as I was about to sleep, I heard whispers. Faint, unintelligible murmurs echoed through the room. My heart pounded. I turned on the light—nothing. But when I looked into the mirror, I saw movement. A shadowy figure stood behind me. Spinning around, I found nothing but empty space.
The whispers grew louder with each passing night. Shadows danced in the corners of my vision. My reflection started to move on its own—smiling when I wasn’t, blinking when I stayed still. Panic took over. I decided to get rid of the mirror.
I smashed it into pieces. Silence. Relief washed over me. But then, from the shards on the floor, dozens of dark eyes stared back at me, unblinking.
And the whispers began again.
I tried everything to escape—burning the pieces, burying them, throwing them into the river. But no matter what I did, the whispers followed me. My once peaceful nights turned into endless torment. My reflection was no longer mine—it watched me with a knowing gaze, lips curling into a sinister grin.
One night, I woke up unable to move. The room was colder than ever. My breath fogged the air, and I felt something—no, someone—standing over me. The whispers were no longer faint; they were loud, overlapping voices chanting in a language I couldn't understand. My body trembled as a shadow loomed over me, closer and closer, until it was inches from my face.
A cold hand caressed my cheek. My heart pounded so hard it felt like it would burst. Then, a voice, clear and chilling, whispered in my ear: "You belong to us now."
Darkness swallowed me whole.
I awoke the next morning, drenched in sweat. The mirror was gone, the whispers silent. I wanted to believe it was over. But every time I passed by a reflective surface—a window, a puddle, a glass door—I saw them watching. Waiting.
The whispers may have faded, but I know the shadows are still there, lurking, biding their time. And one day, they will come for me again.
