The Voice Recording

I found a voice recording on an old phone. The final sentence was meant for me.

I bought an old phone at a flea market.

It didn't work properly.

The screen was cracked.

The battery barely held a charge.

But I managed to turn it on.

There were hundreds of old photographs.

And one audio recording.

I almost deleted it.

Instead, I pressed play.

A man's voice filled the room.

"If you're listening to this, then I probably didn't get the chance to say goodbye."

I froze.

The recording was clearly personal.

The man talked about his family.

His wife.

His children.

His regrets.

Then he said something strange.

"I hope whoever finds this understands that life is shorter than we think."

The recording ended.

I searched the phone.

There was only one contact saved.

"Emma."

I called the number.

An elderly woman answered.

I explained how I had found the phone.

She immediately started crying.

The man had been her husband.

The phone had been stolen years earlier.

She had assumed it was gone forever.

I sent her the recording.

She listened to it that evening.

The next morning, she called me.

There was one sentence she couldn't stop thinking about.

"He always told me he'd record another message."

She laughed through her tears.

"He never did."

I kept the phone.

Not because it was valuable.

But because sometimes an old piece of technology can carry something more important than data.

It can carry someone's last words.
