The Man Who Paid in Coins

Every Friday, the same man paid for his groceries with coins. One day, I learned where they came from.

I worked at a grocery store for three years.

Every Friday evening, an elderly man came in.

He always bought the same things.

Bread.

Milk.

Eggs.

Apples.

And a small chocolate bar.

He always paid with coins.

Hundreds of them.

The cashier would count them patiently.

One Friday, I asked him why he didn't use a bank card.

He smiled.

"My wife doesn't like cards."

I laughed.

Then he explained.

His wife had died several years earlier.

Before she died, she had started collecting coins.

Every time she came home, she emptied her pockets into a jar.

After her death, he continued collecting them.

Every Friday, he took enough coins from the jar to pay for groceries.

"And the chocolate?" I asked.

He smiled.

"That was her favorite."

Years passed.

Eventually, the man stopped coming.

One Friday, I noticed another customer standing in line.

A young woman.

She was holding a jar filled with coins.

When she reached the counter, she smiled.

"I'm paying for my grandfather's groceries."

She placed the coins on the counter.

Then she added one chocolate bar.

I understood.

Some traditions don't disappear.

They simply get passed to another person.
