đź’” The Last Thing She Said

I didn’t understand it… until it was too late.

By Abuzar khanPublished 5 months ago • 3 min read

The last thing she said to me didn’t make sense.

At the time, I thought it was just another one of her strange, half-finished sentences. She had a habit of doing that—starting something meaningful, then drifting off like the thought had slipped through her fingers.

But this time…

This time was different.

“I left it where the light doesn’t stay,” she said.

I remember frowning.

“What does that even mean?” I asked.

She smiled.

Not the kind of smile that answers a question.

The kind that hides one.

“You’ll understand,” she said softly.

And then she walked away.

That was the last time I saw her.

At first, no one thought it was serious.

“She probably just needed space.”

“She does this sometimes.”

“She’ll come back.”

But days passed.

Then weeks.

And suddenly, it wasn’t “space” anymore.

It was missing.

The police got involved. Questions were asked. Places were searched.

Nothing.

No signs of struggle.

No messages.

No clues.

Just… gone.

Except for those words.

“I left it where the light doesn’t stay.”

They kept replaying in my head.

Over and over.

Like a puzzle missing its shape.

I started with the obvious.

Places she used to go.

Her room.

Her favorite café.

The park bench where she’d sit for hours doing nothing.

Nothing.

Everywhere I looked felt… empty.

Like she had erased herself.

But not completely.

Because she left that sentence behind.

And I knew her.

She didn’t say things without meaning.

Even when they sounded meaningless.

“Where the light doesn’t stay…”

I wrote it down.

Stared at it.

Turned it into different meanings.

Darkness?

Shadows?

Night?

No.

That was too simple.

Too obvious.

She wasn’t simple.

Then I remembered something.

A small detail.

A random moment from weeks before she disappeared.

We were walking past an old building downtown. Most of the windows were broken, covered in dust and time.

I pointed at it. “Creepy place.”

She looked at it longer than I did.

“The light never stays there,” she said.

I laughed it off back then.

But now—

My chest tightened.

I went there that same night.

The building stood exactly how I remembered it.

Abandoned.

Silent.

Waiting.

The door was slightly open.

Of course it was.

It always is.

I pushed it gently.

It creaked.

Loud in the silence.

Inside—

Darkness.

But not complete.

Faint light slipped through cracks in the walls, broken glass, gaps in the ceiling.

But it didn’t stay.

Every time the wind moved, the light shifted.

Flickered.

Disappeared.

Returned.

Unstable.

Restless.

Like it didn’t belong.

“Where the light doesn’t stay…”

My heart pounded.

“This is it,” I whispered.

I stepped inside.

Dust filled the air.

The floor creaked beneath me.

Every step felt like I was walking into something I wasn’t supposed to find.

“Hello?” I called.

No answer.

Just the sound of wind moving through broken spaces.

I moved deeper.

Room by room.

Nothing.

Until—

I saw it.

A small wooden box.

Sitting in the center of the floor.

Alone.

Like it had been placed there… on purpose.

The light touched it.

Then slipped away.

Touched it again.

Then gone.

Never staying.

I approached slowly.

My hands were shaking.

“This is it…”

I knelt down.

Opened the box.

Inside—

A letter.

Folded neatly.

My name written on it.

I froze.

“No…”

I didn’t want to open it.

Because opening it meant something real.

Something final.

But I already knew.

Didn’t I?

I unfolded the paper.

My hands trembling.

And I read.

If you’re reading this… then I was right.

You came here.

I’m sorry.

I didn’t know how to explain it to you. I didn’t know how to make you believe me.

But something is wrong with me.

My breath stopped.

I started forgetting things. Small at first. Then bigger. Then… everything.

Not like normal forgetting. Like pieces of me were disappearing.

My eyes blurred.

I didn’t want you to see that happen.

I didn’t want you to remember me that way.

Tears fell onto the paper.

So I left before I disappeared completely.

“No…” I whispered.

I left this here because I knew you’d understand eventually.

You always do.

The words shook in my hands.

By the time you read this… I won’t remember you.

Silence.

The kind that breaks something inside you.

And maybe… you shouldn’t remember me either.

My vision blurred completely now.

“I can’t…” I whispered.

The final line—

The last thing I wanted you to know is this:

I didn’t leave because I stopped caring.

I left because I was afraid… I would forget that I ever did.

I dropped the letter.

My hands numb.

My chest empty.

The light flickered again.

Touched the paper.

Then disappeared.

I sat there.

Alone.

In a place where light doesn’t stay.

And for the first time—

I understood.

She didn’t leave a clue.

She left a goodbye.
