I just finished The Housemaid by Freida McFadden last night and I literally stayed up until 2 AM to finish it. The story follows Millie, a young woman who just got out of jail and is desperate for a fresh start. She gets hired by the Winchester family, Nina and Andrew, who seem perfect from the outside.

From day one, something feels off. Nina is messy, demanding, and constantly changing her mind. At first I honestly disliked her. Andrew, on the other hand, is charming and seems to be the only one who is kind to Millie. Millie is living in a tiny room in the attic, and the door only locks from the outside. What I loved most is how Freida McFadden plays with your expectations. About halfway through, everything you thought you knew flips completely. I had to go back and reread a few chapters because I missed the signs. Nina is not who you think she is, and neither is Andrew. This is the part that made me love the book.

Without giving every detail, the last 30 pages are pure chaos in the best way. There is a confrontation in the attic that had my heart racing. The ending is satisfying and makes sense with everything that was set up before. It gives you closure while still leaving you a little unsettled. I closed the book feeling relieved but thinking about it for hours after.

Final Verdict - Should You Read It?

If you like thrillers with unreliable characters and a fast pace, you will love this one. It is not a slow, literary book. It is meant to be devoured in one or two sittings. I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. The only reason I don't give it a full 5 is because some dialogues felt a little forced at the beginning. But the twist with Nina and Andrew makes up for it completely.
