The House With No Curtains

Every night, the house across the street had every light on. Nobody ever entered or left.

The house had been empty for years.

But every evening at exactly 8 PM, every light came on.

The living room.

The kitchen.

The upstairs bedrooms.

Even the hallway.

I became obsessed.

I asked the neighbors.

Nobody knew.

One evening, I walked across the street.

The front door was locked.

But I could see photographs through the windows.

Hundreds of them.

A family.

Parents.

Children.

Birthdays.

Vacations.

Christmas dinners.

I contacted the owner.

He finally agreed to meet me.

The house belonged to his parents.

They had died within six months of each other.

Before his father died, he had asked his son to keep the house exactly as it was.

"Your mother always hated coming home to a dark house."

So every night, the son turned on every light.

He hadn't sold the house.

He hadn't changed anything.

He simply kept his parents' home alive.

Years later, the house was finally sold.

The new owners renovated everything.

The lights stopped coming on.

But for a long time afterward, I still looked across the street at 8 PM.

Sometimes we become attached to things we don't fully understand.

And sometimes a house isn't really empty.

It's simply waiting for someone to remember it.
