The Call at 3:17 AM

At exactly 3:17 AM, my phone rang every night. Then I discovered who was calling.

By GoldenSpeechPublished about a month ago • 1 min read

For twelve nights, my phone rang at exactly 3:17 AM.

Every time, the number was unknown.

I never answered.

On the thirteenth night, I did.

There was silence.

Then a woman whispered:

"Are you there?"

I said yes.

She began crying.

"I finally found the right number."

I asked who she was.

She gave me a name.

It was my mother's.

My mother had died five years earlier.

I thought it was some cruel prank.

Then the woman said something only my mother would have known.

A nickname from my childhood.

A secret between us.

I couldn't breathe.

I asked her where she got the information.

She told me she had bought an old phone at an auction.

The phone belonged to her late grandmother.

My mother's number was still saved inside it.

The woman had accidentally been calling my number every night while trying to understand who my mother was.

We talked for nearly an hour.

She told me her grandmother had known my mother decades earlier.

Before we hung up, she said:

"Your mother once helped my family."

I realized something.

The call wasn't random.

It was a connection between two families that had survived for decades.

Sometimes people disappear from our lives.

But the things they did for others continue traveling long after they're gone.
