Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir: My Honest Review (Rocky Stole the Book)

I finished Project Hail Mary at 1:47am and I confess I was in bed. My lamp was still on. My phone was dead. I started at 9pm. I said 30 pages. I read 400 pages. My wife said turn off light. I said 5 more minutes. I lied. I kept reading until Rocky came. I felt like a kid again. I was laughing and crying at same time. This book is from 2021 but the movie with Ryan Gosling just came out in March 2026 and now everyone is reading it again.

I started reading Project Hail Mary on the train. 40 minutes waiting and riding. I hate sci-fi that is too nerdy with math. I am not smart. I failed physics. But this book is different. Andy Weir wrote The Martian too. This is about Ryland Grace. He is a middle school science teacher. He wakes up in space. He does not know where he is. He has amnesia. Two dead bodies next to him. He has to save Earth. Sun is dying because of Astrophage. Little alien bacteria eating the sun. He is alone. I was on the train. Thinking about being alone in space. I missed my stop again. Had to walk 12 minutes. I did not care. I kept reading because I wanted to know who is Rocky.

The Main Doubt Everyone Has: Do You Need to Be Smart to Read It?

Look, this is the #1 question in every comment on Goodreads. People think Project Hail Mary is hard sci-fi with equations and you need PhD. That is not true, you know?

I am dumb at science. I understood it. Andy explains everything like you are 12. He says "look, this is how Astrophage works". He uses jokes. Grace is funny. He makes video logs like "I'm going to die". He panics. He messes up. That makes you like him. You learn with him. You don't need to know physics.

Second doubt: is the ending happy or sad? Without spoiler, in the book Grace lives on planet Erid with Rocky. Eridians build him a dome with beach. He teaches little Eridians science. In the movie they changed a bit, they show his ship can go back to Earth. Andy Weir said in 2025 interview that ending was baked from day one. He wanted Grace to start as coward. He actually refused the mission. He ran from police. They forced him into coma. That is the twist. He was not hero. He became hero because of Rocky. I was on my couch. Thinking about that. It made me cry. I thought I would be coward too.

Third doubt: is it better than The Martian? Yes. For me yes. The Martian is survival alone. Project Hail Mary is friendship. It has heart.

My Unpopular Opinion That Will Make People Mad

Here is my hot take that will get me hate in comments. Rocky is way better than Grace. And the middle of Project Hail Mary drags a lot.

Everyone loves Grace because Ryan Gosling plays him and he is charming. But Rocky, girl, Rocky is the best alien in sci-fi history. He is a spider made of rock. He talks in music. He sees with sound. He is funny, dense, loyal. He has no face but I cried for him. When his carapace smokes because Earth air is too cold for him, I panicked. Grace is okay. Rocky is the heart. I think book should be called Project Rocky. And to be honest, the middle part when Grace does science alone for 100 pages is boring. I skipped 20 pages of calculation about fuel. I was on my bed reading. Thinking about pizza. I almost quit at page 200. Then Rocky appears and book becomes 5 stars again. Many reviews on Letterboxd say same: pacing suffers in middle, finale fatigue at end. They say movie could cut karaoke and beach scenes. I agree. Book could cut 50 pages of math.

Also, I think Stratt is more interesting than Grace. She is the boss who forces him to go. She is ruthless but saves Earth. No one talks about her.

Scorecard: My Honest Numbers

Plot / Ideas: 5/5 - Project Hail Mary has best plot in years. Sun dying, Astrophage, save Earth, first contact with alien. Twist that Grace was coward who refused call. Andy Weir said he wanted hero who fears conflict then finds friend. It works. I could not stop reading. 4.51 stars on Goodreads for reason. 1.7M ratings.

Characters: 5/5 - Rocky 10/5, Grace 4/5. Rocky is alien but more human than human. Grace is likable, funny, panics, makes mistakes. Like Matt Damon in The Martian or Tom Hanks in Cast Away, he makes solitude interesting. Stratt is badass. Duo Grace and Rocky is best duo since forever. It reminded me of WALL-E.

Writing: 4.5/5 - Simple English, 6th grade, funny, video logs. Andy explains hard science easy. But repeats jokes. And too much math in middle. I get it, you are smart, but I don't need 10 pages of calculation.

Pacing: 3.5/5 - First 150 pages 5/5 fast, mystery, where am I? Middle 150 pages 2.5/5 slow, science alone, drags. Last 150 pages 5/5 fast again, Rocky and Grace, friendship, ending. Average 3.5 but ending makes you forget middle.

My Verdict on Project Hail Mary

If you love sci-fi with heart, not just spaceships, Project Hail Mary is best book since The Martian. It is not about saving Earth. It is about finding friend when you are alone. If you hated The Martian because too much science, you will still love this because of Rocky.

I give Project Hail Mary 4.5 stars. Not 5 because middle drags and Grace is less interesting than Rocky. But I cried at 1:47am for a rock. I never cried for a rock before. And ending is happy, not bleak. That is rare for sci-fi. I walked out of book feeling good, like movie reviews say.

Would I read again? Yes, but only Rocky chapters. Would I watch movie? Yes, Ryan Gosling is perfect, Andy Weir said "It's really good" at Comic-Con 2025.
