Summary

The story of Gypsy-Rose Blanchard’s life can be narrated by her own words featured in her memoir called My Time to Stand. Together with Melissa Moore and Michele Matrisciani, Gypsy explains how she was sexually abused while being raised in Missouri by her mother Dee Dee Blanchard, who diagnosed her with Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Her story is told from her childhood, overwhelmed with unneeded medical procedures and the falsification of her illness to her breakthrough of escaping in a way that the world was not prepared for.

Dee Dee, who controlled her daughter’s life to the minutest detail, manipulated everyone with tales of her daughter Gypsy’s illnesses, to milk sympathy and charity. Thus, the primary protagonist’s main conflict springs from her slowly awakening to the fact of her imprisonment in her own life and her attempt to wrestle control of her body and her life. The central question posed by this memoir is harrowing: What do you do when the cage of abuse is your mother?

The Results

Just reading the book My Time to Stand was an emotionally charged experience. The reader is with Gypsy suffering and feeling like a helpless victim, too as the suffering is described in detail. She had flashes of deep grief at times; as when, she gave a raw account of the loneliness she felt in her childhood, the operations she underwent which were needless, and the mental oppression at the hand of her mother. At the same time, I found brief glimpses of assertiveness that Gypsy had in her, which led her to regain her Independence at the climax of the book.

The book also features one passage that enormously shocked me; she was able to see her whole body through a long mirror after years of seeing reflections only in a small mirror that she found in her prison. She has a full-length mirror now, where she has a vision of the whole thing, she writes, a powerful message for finding her freedom.

This memoir is a source of inspiration that helped me to understand the reality of putting up with the unbelievable ordeal. It also explored the psychological and organizational reasons that made the abuse persist, including colluding doctors, social services deficiency, etc. By all the accounts, the story of Gypsy is a powerful account of people’s ability to stay alive and the never fading need for self-actualization.

Strengths

Using real-life accounts is one of the biggest advantages that My Time to Stand has to offer. There is no element of glamour in Gypsy’s life, and she does not sugarcoat her past and does not aim to be an entirely blameless victim. Rather she accepts all that and vouches for guilt, confusion, and errors that she has come across to.

The book is very well typeset, it changes from introspective comments to descriptions of events very smoothly. This requires the readers to see Gypsy not only in the past but in the present and as she transforms herself. Quotes like, “People want to know: What was the last ‘what’?” In the same breath, Barker provided the reader with an opportunity to capture the attention of the reader, while addressing the gory curiosity of the public in her life.

In addition, the co-authors make sure that Gypsy’s persona is real to the events throughout the movie. The urgency and the feeling of vulnerability that one can hear in the words of the woman turns her story into an unforgettable one.

Weaknesses

On the one hand, that is the book’s greatest virtue; on the other hand, the possibility of being overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information is quite real. The descriptions of the medical treatments and abuse provided may be shocking and detailed and will be a challenge to some of the readers to digest. Secondly, there are also some secondary stories which the author tells along the way, and which do not seem to be directly related to the subject. For example, long digressive stories from her mother’s youth are interesting but often give an impression of escaping from the Gypsy Rose Lee affair.

Some questions are, however, left unanswered in the book: more specifically, some of the questions pertain to the generalization of Gypsy’s experiences. This is certainly a memoir, and the people looking for critiques of the systems that failed may feel that these aspects are not explored enough.

Final Thoughts

In My Time to Stand Allen is as raw and vulnerable as one can be when telling a story of abuse and, at the same time, the slow process of regaining agency. It is essential to underline that Gypsy’s is not only a story of survival but a story of getting back: her body, her mind and her/certain future. Anyone trying to find out the mysteries of trauma, the strength of a human being should read this book.

My Recommendations

For readers that follow the story of a Gypsy, I suggest that you continue reading other memoirs with a focus on abuse and survival: Educated by Tara Westover, The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, and Shattered Silence by Melissa Moore. These books like My Time to Stand present insights that can help one know what it takes to stand after a terrible past.

If you want to continue reading about Gypsy’s life, of course, documentaries or articles can help, but it is crucial to remember that memoirs are always closer to the truth about a person’s life. Last but not least, may this book create a call to action or to further educate one’s self about Munchausen syndrome by proxy and for those who want to stand up against child abuse and support the groups that aim to protect victims.

This picture is a worthy illustration of gypsy’s words that the way to turn into a tall man begins with the first step. Use it to fuel your own battles, based on her courage.
