A coward lives to fight another day
When survival is more important than honor, a coward’s escape is his victory."
The winds howled through the streets of Eastbrook as Marcus sprinted down the alley, his heart pounding in his chest. His boots hit the cobblestones with a rhythmic thud, his breath coming in quick gasps. The chase was relentless. The men hunting him were ruthless, their shadows closing in from every direction. Marcus wasn’t a warrior, nor a hero. He was just a man trying to survive in a city where survival was a game of chance. Born into poverty, he had learned early on that when faced with a fight, running was often the best option. His father had taught him that—though his father had long been gone, swallowed by the same ruthless world that Marcus now tried to avoid. But tonight, he had made a mistake. A gamble. The night had started with a simple job, a quick exchange of stolen goods for a decent payout. It should’ve been easy. But as soon as Marcus saw the men who had hired him, a chill ran down his spine. They were part of the notorious Red Vulture gang, led by a vicious man named Cruz. Marcus knew their reputation, and he knew that getting involved with them meant trouble. But greed had clouded his judgment. Now, trouble had found him. He stumbled into the open, eyes scanning for an escape. The alleyways were a maze, but they all led to the same place—the edge of the docks. It was there, at the water’s edge, where Marcus paused. He could hear the distant voices of his pursuers, echoing off the walls, getting closer. "Where the hell is he?" one of them shouted, his voice cutting through the night. Marcus’ pulse raced. He had one choice. One moment to make the decision that could save his life. And he knew what it was. As the footsteps neared, Marcus ducked into a small warehouse. It was dark, and the air smelled of saltwater and oil. He wasn’t skilled in combat, didn’t have the strength to face down these men. He wasn’t brave enough to stand and fight, not against the likes of them. But he was clever. He could think. In the darkness, Marcus waited. His breath evened out as he steadied himself. The door creaked open, and the thud of boots against the floor echoed through the room. A voice called out, "We know you're in here, Marcus. You can’t run forever." He heard their footsteps grow closer, and in that moment, Marcus made a split-second decision. As the first man stepped into the shadows, Marcus grabbed a heavy chain from the floor and swung it with all his might. The chain collided with the man’s head, sending him crashing to the ground. The other two hesitated, but Marcus didn’t give them a chance. He bolted for the back exit, sprinting once more toward the docks. He didn’t look back. His heart was pounding, but he couldn’t afford to stop now. He had to keep running, keep surviving. When he reached the water, Marcus didn’t hesitate. He jumped into the river, letting the current carry him away. It wasn’t bravery, but survival. It wasn’t glory, but the instinct to live. As he floated downriver, he knew one thing for certain: a coward may not win the fight, but a coward lives to fight another day.
