I think that paintings depicting animals are very creative and imaginative. I began this series with Animals on Canvas with a link given below. Now I continue with Wild Animals on Canvas. After this article, there will be paintings depicting lions, horses, cows, and birds.

French artist Rosa Bonheur developed a fondness for lions during the Franco-Prussian War. She loved it that lions were associated with bravery, freedom, and rebellion. She began studying lions at fairs.

Russian artist Ivan Shishking painted the pine trees in the painting which were inspired by the forests of the Gorodomlya Island on Lake Seliger, Russia. Russian realist painter Konstantin Savitsky painted the bears depicted in the painting. Together they created a painting that depicts a coniferous forest with evergreen trees and a family of bears, a mother bear, and her three cubs, playing on a fallen pine tree.

American artist William Holbrook Bead painted satirical paintings of animals doing human-like activities. In this painting, you can see foxes, monkeys, pigs, and other animals standing like children at school in front of their schoolmaster who happens to be an ape.

Italian artist Leonardo Da Vinci painted this remarkable painting. It depicts Cecilia Gallerani, the young mistress of Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan. She is sitting with an ermine in her arms. The ermine is a traditional symbol of purity and moderation.

English artist George Stubbs enjoyed painting exotic animals. Zebra is one of his first artworks of a series of paintings. The animal depicted in the painting belongs to Queen Charlotte and was the sole survivor of a pair of zebras brought back from Africa by Sir Thomas Adams.

English artist George Stubbs also created artwork with Australian animals. He based his painting on a drawing as well as a sample of kangaroo skin collected during the first voyage of James Cook. This painting can be viewed at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London, England.

Swiss animal and landscape artist Jacques-Laurent Agasse created a painting with a giraffe. The giraffe was sent to George IV as a gift from Mehmet Ali, Pasha of Egypt in 1827. The painting depicts the animal in captivity with his keepers trying to get him to drink.

Flemish artist Davit Teniers The Younger created paintings focused on taverns. When an artistic movement had monkeys as the central subjects he depicted monkeys in a tavern. In the 16th and 17th centuries monkeys in art were popular and were often included in humorous scenes.
