This is a short series about paintings that depict the four seasons. I started with autumn and all of the beautiful colorful leaves, then came winter and now this is spring. As I go through the seasons there’ll be links to the articles below.

Primavera Sandro Botticelli

Italian artist Sandro Botticelli created this painting in the late 1470s or early 1480s. It became one of his most well-known paintings. The title of the artwork Primavera means Spring in Italian. It depicts six female figures and one male figure. A small cupid hovers above the figure thought to be Venus. Primavera is widely recognized as one of the most iconic artworks which center around the spring season.

Springtime Claude Monet

French artist Claude Monet created this artwork depicts his wife Camilla sitting beneath a canopy of lilacs reading a book. The artist painted this shortly after he and his family moved to the small village of Argenteuil in France.

Springtime Pierre Auguste Cote

French artist Pierre Auguste Cote created artworks in the style known as Academic Classicism. This painting depicts two young lovers on a swing surrounded by a lush forest. The young girl clings to the young man while looking lovingly into his eyes. This artwork is among the most famous about the spring season and clearly indicates that spring is the season of love.

Le Boulevard de Montmartre, Matinee de Printemps 1897 Camille Pissaro

French Impressionist artist Camille Pissaro was famous for his cityscape paintings. In this painting, he captures the busy boulevard in bright spring sunshine with leafy green trees.

The Small Meadows in Spring 1881 Alfred Sisley

French artist Alfred Sisley was an accomplished Impressionist painter. He created this artwork in 1881, it is one of his most celebrated paintings. It depicts a lovely sunny setting with a young girl strolling along a path stretching along the banks of the Seine River. The figure in the painting is Sisley’s 12-year-old daughter.

Almond Blossoms 1890 Vincent Van Gogh

Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh painted many artworks that depicted blossoming trees since they represented hope and rebirth. This particular painting shows the artist’s interest in Japanese woodblock paintings. He created this while living in Arles, a coastal city on the southern coast of France. It was made as a gift to his brother Theo and his sister-in-law Jo as they were having a child who would be named after the artist, Vincent. The painting depicts a tree branch set against a bright blue sky with pink blossoms on the branches of the almond tree.

Fishing in Spring, the Pont de Clichy (Asnires) 1887 Vincent Van Gogh

Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh created this artwork depicting a scene upon the Seine River. A man is sitting in a small boat, fishing with a rod and reel beneath a tree. A bridge can be seen in the background and the entire painting is encapsulated with flowery vegetation in the colors of light orange and green.

Spring 1894 Lawrence Alma-Tadema

Dutch artist Lawrence Alma-Tadema is another artist from the Academic Classicism movement. Born in the Netherlands he later became a British citizen and traveled all over Europe. This artwork depicts a scene from the ancient Roman Empire and a celebration of spring, Women and children parade through the city on a festive occasion which marks the arrival of the spring season.

Spring Giuseppe Arcimboldo

Italian artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo was an artist from the Renaissance movement. The artist created a series of artworks titled The Four Seasons between 1563 and 1573. His most unique artwork depicts the spring season as a seated individual in portrait style. Spring as a human figure is made up of flowers and other vegetation.

Spring Blossoms, Montclair, New Jersey 1891 George Inness

American artist George Inness was a great artist of the 19th century. He created this artwork in 1891 toward the end of his life. The painting imports Impressionist characteristics and depicts a spring setting in a small field dotted with blossoming pink and white trees. A house can be seen in the background. This is among his greatest artworks.
