Birthday
Lena woke up on her birthday with a feeling of excitement and anticipation. Her 10th birthday was going to be special—she could just feel it. The sun was shining, birds were chirping, and the smell of her favorite pancakes wafted from the kitchen. She jumped out of bed, quickly dressed, and ran downstairs.“Happy birthday, sweetheart!” her mom greeted her with a big smile, flipping pancakes on the stove. Her dad, holding a bouquet of colorful balloons, kissed the top of her head. “Look who’s the birthday girl today!”“Thanks, Mom! Thanks, Dad!” Lena beamed. She couldn’t help but notice that the living room was decorated with streamers and balloons, all in her favorite colors. But what really caught her attention was a small, wrapped gift sitting on the dining table.“Can I open it now?” she asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.“Go ahead,” her dad said, handing her the gift.Lena tore through the wrapping paper, revealing a small, plain-looking box. When she opened it, she found a simple key inside. Confused, she looked up at her parents.“What does the key unlock?” she asked. Her mom winked. “That’s for you to find out.”Lena’s heart raced. A mystery! She loved mysteries. She quickly finished her breakfast, her mind swirling with possibilities. Where could the key lead? Was it to a secret room? A hidden treasure? She started searching the house, testing the key on every lock she could find. But none of them fit.Just as she was starting to feel frustrated, she heard a soft bark outside. Lena rushed to the window and saw their family dog, Max, wagging his tail excitedly by the garden shed. She had never paid much attention to the shed before; it was just where her dad kept his tools. But now, something seemed different.Lena dashed outside, key in hand, and approached the shed. Her heart pounded in her chest as she reached for the lock on the door. It was rusty and old, but when she inserted the key, it turned smoothly. The door creaked open, and Lena hesitated for a moment before stepping inside. The shed was dimly lit, with beams of sunlight filtering through cracks in the wooden walls. Lena’s eyes slowly adjusted, and she noticed a large, mysterious object covered with a dusty cloth in the corner. Her curiosity got the better of her, and she pulled the cloth away.Underneath was a beautiful wooden chest, ornately carved with intricate designs. Her hands trembled as she lifted the lid. Inside, she found a treasure trove of art supplies—paints, brushes, sketchbooks, and colored pencils, all neatly arranged. There was even a small easel.Lena gasped. She had always loved drawing and painting, but her supplies were old and worn out. This was beyond anything she had imagined.Just then, her parents appeared at the door of the shed, smiling warmly. “Happy birthday, Lena,” her dad said. “We’ve seen how much you love art, so we thought it was time to give you a space of your own to create.”Tears of joy welled up in Lena’s eyes. “Thank you so much! This is the best birthday present ever!”Her mom hugged her tightly. “We’re so proud of you, Lena. We can’t wait to see what beautiful things you’ll create here.”The rest of the day was spent in the shed, with Lena eagerly exploring her new art supplies and sketching everything that came to mind. Max lay contentedly by her side, as if he knew this was a special day.As the sun set, painting the sky in hues of pink and orange, Lena felt a deep sense of happiness. It wasn’t just the gift itself that made her birthday special—it was the love and thoughtfulness behind it. This was a birthday she would never forget, and as she drifted off to sleep that night, she couldn’t wait to wake up and create again.
