Diamond Painting vs Paint by Numbers: What’s the Difference?

Same idea, different vibe. Which one feels right for you?

By Diamond Painting LabPublished 7 months ago • 2 min read

People often put diamond painting and paint by numbers in the same category. And yeah, they do look kind of similar at first—you get a canvas, some instructions, and you slowly fill it in.

But once you actually sit down and try them, the feeling is honestly quite different.

One uses paint, the other uses tiny beads

Paint by numbers is basically coloring with a brush. You follow the numbers, match the colors, and fill everything in step by step.

Diamond painting is more like placing little shiny beads onto the canvas. You don’t use paint at all—just a pen tool and a lot of tiny “diamonds.”

So one feels like painting, the other feels more like building something piece by piece.

The vibe is different

Paint by numbers still feels a bit like “art.” You’re mixing colors in your head, thinking about edges, trying to stay inside the lines.

Diamond painting is way more repetitive. Pick up a bead, place it, repeat. That’s it.

And strangely, that’s exactly why people find it relaxing—it doesn’t really ask you to think too much.

Speed vs patience

Paint by numbers can move faster, especially when you’re filling big areas with one color.

Diamond painting takes longer. There’s no shortcut—you just slowly place every single piece.

But a lot of people actually like that part. It kind of forces you to slow down without realizing it.

The final look

Paint by numbers usually ends up looking like a painted picture—soft and flat in texture.

Diamond painting is more shiny. When light hits it, it actually sparkles, which gives it a slightly different “wow” effect in real life.

So which one should you try?

There’s no real winner here.

If you like painting and a bit of creativity control, paint by numbers might feel better.

If you want something more chill, almost like zoning out while keeping your hands busy, diamond painting usually wins.

A lot of people start with one… and end up trying the other anyway.

A small idea if you feel like trying something different

If you end up liking the idea of diamond painting, there’s actually a slightly more personal way to do it.

Some people turn their own photos into a canvas—like a pet, a random phone picture they love, or just a moment they don’t want to forget.

It’s not really about making something “perfect.” It’s more about the process of slowly seeing something familiar come together in a different way.

Even just previewing how a photo would look like in that format can be kind of interesting on its own.

If you’re curious, it might be worth taking a look at how a custom diamond painting would turn out. Sometimes seeing the preview alone is already part of the fun.
