A Goodbye Story

She walked up to your grave with heavy hearts weighing in on her and with that feeling of open sorrow she knelt down to greet the wind. She Sank her knees into the untamed ground and felt her face turn to whisper as she disappeared into the past. It was autumn, and the leaves were falling like rain all around her. The land where she watched her village was now just covered in the unknown. The trees where she watched her young ones play were now no more, and the leaves seemed to try to cover it all up as a blanket of shielding this harshness to her new reality. She took her shall and wrapped it a little closer to her body, the cold wind hitting her face as to remind her it was still with her. She felt like a stranger, standing in the spot that she’d stood through many generations, she strained herself for those memories. She let one tear fall down her cheek, but she would not allow herself another. Crying was not what was going to bring back her land, her people, her home. Soon her family would spread apart, and her grandchildren would no longer recognize her presence. She could do nothing in the stillness that day had brought her, nothing but stand solid, as to try and hold her place for a moment more. Watching to remember, letting go of what can not seem to be undone, and praying that not everything she’d ever loved would be lost.

Dear Princess Angeline,

The pioneers took away your home and I pray that from watching above you find pieces of it still. What happened to you is a pain I can not justifiably project through this writing but I just wanted people to remember your name and your people’s name. I can not go back in time, I can just try to show you how sorry I am that this happened. May you be resting in light and in peace.
