WHAT IS SINUSITIS?

Sinusitis, also known as a sinus infection or rhinosinusitis is a common condition worldwide. However, it is observed that sinusitis has a relatively higher prevalence in Pakistan compared to some other regions.

As sinus is a widespread condition where the paranasal sinuses are inflamed, it causes a congested nose, headache and facial pain. The doctor of sinus surgery in Pakistan charges from 25,000 PKR to 90,000 PRK depending upon the doctor's qualification and expertise.

Paranasal sinuses are air cavities in the bones of the skulls. There are four pain sinuses located on either side of the head:

Maxillary

Frontal

Ethmoid

Sphenoid

TOP 5 CAUSES OF SINUS:

Sinusitis, or sinus infection, can be caused by various factors. Here are some common causes of sinusitis:

Viral Infection:

The most common reason for sinusitis is viral contamination, typically the commonplace bloodless or flu. Those infections can lead to irritation and congestion within the nasal passages, blocking the sinuses and causing sinusitis signs.

Allergies:

Hypersensitive reactions to substances which include pollen, dirt mites, pet dander, or positive meals can cause irritation and swelling inside the nasal passages. This may obstruct the sinuses, promoting the improvement of sinusitis.

Bacterial Infections:

In some cases, sinusitis may be caused by a bacterial infection. Bacteria can enter the sinuses and multiply, leading to an infection. Bacterial sinusitis often occurs as a complication of a viral infection that hasn't resolved or improved.

Nasal Irritants:

Exposure to irritants like cigarette smoke, air pollutants, chemicals, or strong odours can cause inflammation and irritation in the nasal passages. Prolonged exposure to these irritants can contribute to the development of sinusitis.

Structural Abnormalities:

Structural issues in the nose and sinuses can contribute to the development of sinusitis. Deviated nasal septum (a crooked partition between the nostrils), nasal polyps (small growths in the nasal passages), or narrow sinus openings can obstruct proper drainage and ventilation, leading to sinusitis.

Symptoms of Sinusitis include:

Blocking

Facial pain and swelling

Headache

Nasal congested

Loss of smell

Cough

You may also have:

Bad breathing

Fever

Ear pressure or fullness

HOW TO PREVENT SINUSITIS?

There is no fully proven way to prevent sinusitis. Some things might help.

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water to prevent the spread of bacteria and viruses.

Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke, air pollutants, and strong chemicals.

Drink plenty of fluids to thin mucus and promote sinus drainage.

Eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly, manage stress, and get enough sleep.

Seek appropriate treatment for conditions like nasal polyps or a deviated septum.

Keep living spaces clean and well-ventilated

TREATEMENT:

Treatment options depend on how long the condition lasts.

CONCLUSION:

It's important to note that these symptoms can also be indicative of other conditions, so a proper diagnosis by a healthcare professional is necessary to determine the underlying cause and provide appropriate treatment.
