Signal and Telegram messaging apps have begun to be downloaded by large numbers of people around the world since the controversy over changes to the rules for sharing personal information on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp had asked its more than two billion users a few days ago for permission to share content with Facebook and stipulated that if they did not accept it, these users would not be able to use WhatsApp after February 8.

Will the increase in download of Signal and Telegram app affect WhatsApp usage?

These terms and conditions will not apply in the UK and Europe, however this notification has been sent to all users.

Remember that Telegram and Signal also provide free and secure messaging services like WhatsApp.

Below I describe some reasons why people are leaving WhatsApp.

How much did the signal users increase?

The signal was downloaded by 246,000 users worldwide in the week before WhatsApp announced the change in the rules, compared to the week following the announcement of the rules. So far 8.8 million people have downloaded it.

Most of the downloading users are from India where 12 thousand to 2.7m downloads, 7400 to 191 thousands downloads in the UK and 63 thousand to 1.1m downloads in the United States.

A series of tweets from Signal on Twitter said it had received complaints from some people about forming groups and delays in receiving codes sent for verification because of the large number of people . Downloading the app however we are resolving these issues and our new servers are ready to serve you.

Telegram subscribers also increased

The Telegram has gained more popularity than Signal, with more than 6.5 million downloads worldwide in the week beginning December 28 and up to 11 million the following week. In the UK alone, the number of downloads increased from 47,000 to 110,000 in just two weeks.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp's global downloads have dropped from 11.3 million to 9.2 million.

Is this a big problem for Whatsapp ?

In my opinion this is not a big problem for WhatsApp because WhatsApp has been downloaded 5.6 billion times since its launch.

It will be difficult for competitors to change user habits and WhatsApp will continue to be the world's most popular and used platform.

It will be interesting to see if this trend continues or consumers return to their old habits.WhatsApp said in an explanatory statement that the content it would share with Facebook would not include messages, groups and call logs.

What is the WhatsApp new security policy?

According to the new policy, WhatsApp is forcing its users to accept new security policies if they want to continue using the app in the future. Failure to do so will result in deletion of their account.

WhatsApp now has the right to share information about you with Facebook, Instagram and other companies. This data includes the user's phone number on which the WhatsApp is registered, as well as the IP address (Internet connection location), mobile phone or laptop information, including its model and company.

What difference will these changes make?

This raises the question of whether WhatsApp will share all this user information with another company for the first time.

In 2014, Facebook bought WhatsApp for 19 billion dollars. Since September 2016, WhatsApp has been sharing its data with Facebook. This year, however, WhatsApp has made it clear that it is regularly changing its security policy with a few changes.

Keith Cart, head of WhatsApp on Facebook, explained the new policies in a Twitter message: "We've updated our policy to make it more transparent and to better explain business features to the public. While we wrote about the new policy in October 2020. This includes the ability to trade on WhatsApp and send business messages to people. It is important for us to clearly understand that this update defines business communication and does not change the way WhatsApp shares data with Facebook. It does not affect our general customers. Users can chat privately with friends and family."

The digital rights expert believes that the new policy could affect users who do not use any social applications other than WhatsApp, such as Facebook and Instagram. Their metadata will also go to companies that until now only had WhatsApp. Yes, if you are also present on other social platforms, it is not a problem for these users.

Can Facebook or other companies read my WhatsApp message now?

No. Your conversations on WhatsApp are kept secret from each other, meaning that all your WhatsApp chats, including audio / video calls, photos, videos and all the content sent in the chat are completely secure and only Available to the people you're talking to. WhatsApp's new policy is not about sharing your general data with Facebook more than ever. It refers to your data and your engagement with its platform, purchases and other business activities.

Why has WhatsApp changed its policy?

Mark Zuckerberg has already announced in 2020 that he wants Facebook and all its affiliates to merge Instagram and Facebook Messenger. When Facebook bought WhatsApp in 2014, it said it would not change its privacy policies. But in 2016, WhatsApp gave users the choice of whether or not to allow other companies to use their information. But that will not happen now. Mark Zuckerberg added that the same concerns were raised around the world in 2014 that Facebook's platform is a business model that runs on advertising, so how can we keep WhatsApp away from this model.

However, I believe that the change in policy is aimed at making it possible for the company to use WhatsApp to gauge consumer interest in business and shopping and to reach out to people on Facebook and Instagram. Advertise as many targets as possible.

Will WhatsApp's new policy apply to users around the world?

These new policies do not apply in Europe, Brazil and the United States. This is mainly due to the strict privacy laws in place, WhatsApp is bound to follow them.People living other than above mentioned countries are leaving WhatsApp.
