The iPhone 18 Pro Is Better. That Is Not Why It Costs More.
Apple raised the Pro to 9,999 yuan and pushed the top model past 20,000. The A20 Pro and variable aperture are real upgrades. The reason for the price hike sits in a memory chip factory, not in Cupertino.

iPhone 18 Pro price increase: the upgrade did not hold it up. Memory and storage chips did.
After Apple’s fall 2026 event, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at 9,999 yuan and the Pro Max at 10,999 yuan. The top configuration reaches 21,499 yuan. The previous Pro started at 8,999 yuan and the Pro Max at 9,999 yuan. Each rose by 1,000 yuan.
Can the upgrades justify that increase? The answer gets clearer when you separate price, cost, upgrades, competition, and buying advice.
Price
The iPhone 17 Pro started at 8,999 yuan. The iPhone 18 Pro starts at 9,999 yuan. That is 1,000 yuan more, or 11.1%. The iPhone 17 Pro Max started at 9,999 yuan. The iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at 10,999 yuan. That is also 1,000 yuan more, or 10.0%. Higher storage pushes the top price to 21,499 yuan. The iPhone now sits above the 20,000-yuan line.
Other models rose too. The 256GB iPhone 17 went from 5,999 yuan to 6,799 yuan, up 800 yuan, or 13.3%. The 256GB iPhone 17e went from 4,499 yuan to 5,299 yuan, up 800 yuan, or 17.8%. The 256GB iPhone Air went from 7,999 yuan to 8,799 yuan, up 800 yuan, or 10.0%.
Apple had already raised iPad and Mac prices. The iPad mini rose 20%. The iPad Air rose 25%. The Mac mini rose 33.3%. The 14-inch MacBook Pro rose 18.5%. The iPhone 18 Pro increase is one part of a wider Apple price adjustment.
Cost
Memory and storage chips drove this round. AI data centers have been buying HBM and enterprise storage in large volumes. Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron moved capacity toward higher-profit products. DRAM and NAND flash for phones became tighter, and prices climbed.
Supply-chain cost estimates put 12GB of memory at about 145 dollars, up from about 39 dollars in the previous generation. That is a rise of about 272%. The cost of 256GB of flash storage nearly quadrupled. Memory and storage moved from about 10% of bill-of-materials cost to around 34%. In the second quarter of 2026, phones priced between 400 and 600 dollars saw their bill-of-materials cost rise 52% year over year. Almost all of that came from memory and storage. For a 1TB iPhone 18 Pro Max, cost rose by nearly 300 dollars compared with the previous generation at the same capacity.
Apple has the strongest bargaining power in the industry. It still cannot make memory suppliers sell at a loss. The earlier iPad and Mac increases were a signal. The iPhone waited until after the fall event, which is late by comparison.
The price increase comes from cost. The upgrades happened along the way.
Upgrades
The iPhone 18 Pro series adds several things.
The A20 Pro chip uses a 2nm process. CPU single-core performance rises by up to about 20%. GPU performance rises by up to about 40%. AI computing power is about 2x. Memory bandwidth is up 50%.
The main camera gets a variable aperture. This is a first for iPhone. Photographers and video creators can control depth of field and light intake more flexibly.
The cooling system uses a new VC vapor chamber with three times the heat dissipation area. Sustained performance release is up 40%.
The Pro reaches 24 hours of battery life. The Pro Max reaches 30 hours. Wired charging reaches 50% in 15 minutes. Maximum power is estimated at around 50W.
The Pro Max goes from 231g to 249g. With a case and screen protector, it approaches 300g.
An eSIM version may arrive. If it reaches the China market, it will change how dual-SIM users work. Carrier support will decide the details.
The A20 Pro and variable aperture carry technical weight. Cooling and battery life are easier for ordinary users to notice. This is a normal major upgrade, not a new phone shape. There is no foldable design. There is no under-display camera. The interaction model is not rebuilt.
For users on the iPhone 14 Pro or earlier, the upgrade will feel clear. For iPhone 16 Pro and 17 Pro users, the gain is small. Doubling AI computing power sounds strong. Killer on-device AI applications are not widespread. Variable aperture is not a must-have for most users.
Can these upgrades justify a 1,000-yuan increase? Mostly no.
Competition
At 9,999 yuan, the iPhone 18 Pro faces strong rivals. Huawei and Xiaomi have raised prices as well.
The Xiaomi 17 went from 4,499 yuan to 5,099 yuan, up 600 yuan, or 13.3%. The Xiaomi 17 Pro went from 4,999 yuan to 5,699 yuan, up 700 yuan, or 14.0%. The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max went from 5,999 yuan to 6,999 yuan, up 1,000 yuan, or 16.7%.
The Huawei Mate 80 went from 4,699 yuan to 5,499 yuan, up 800 yuan, or 17.0%. The Mate 80 Pro went from 5,999 yuan to 6,999 yuan, up 1,000 yuan, or 16.7%. The Mate 80 Pro Max went from 7,999 yuan to 8,999 yuan, up 1,000 yuan, or 12.5%.
The whole industry is raising prices. The iPhone 18 Pro increase of 10% to 11% is not the largest in phones. iPad and Mac increases were larger.
Apple still has the A20 Pro’s absolute performance, iOS ecosystem consistency, long system updates, strong resale value, and video creation tools. It also has a higher price, charging speed that is not top-tier, camera hardware that is less aggressive than some Android flagships, more weight, and a top price that overlaps with MacBook.
The iPhone 18 Pro remains a good phone. The reasons it is the only choice are shrinking.
Buying advice
Users on iPhone 14 Pro or earlier should consider upgrading. Screen, chip, camera, battery life, and charging all improve. Photographers and video creators should look at the variable aperture, A20 Pro computing power, cooling, and battery life. Heavy on-device AI users may benefit from the memory bandwidth and computing power. Users with enough budget who want the latest experience can buy new.
iPhone 16 Pro and 17 Pro users should keep their phones. The marginal gain is small after the price increase. Budget-sensitive users should look at the discounted iPhone 17 Pro series. Users sensitive to weight should hold a Pro Max first. At 249g, it becomes nearly 300g with a case. Users who need dual physical SIMs should wait for clear China-market eSIM details.
If you use an iPhone 13 or 14 and battery health is below 80%, replace the battery and keep the phone another year. If you must change phones, prioritize the discounted iPhone 17 Pro or wait for the first iPhone 18 promotion. If you want the top configuration, ask whether you would rather spend 20,000 yuan on a phone or buy a MacBook Pro plus a standard iPhone.
Conclusion
The iPhone 18 Pro upgrades do not justify this price increase. The A20 Pro, variable aperture, cooling, and battery life matter. They are not enough to make most 16 Pro and 17 Pro users buy a new phone.
The increase still happened. Memory and storage quotes pushed prices up. The keynote did not. Apple waited until now, which counts as restraint. iPad, Mac, Xiaomi, and Huawei all raised prices too.
Whether it makes sense depends on which pocket pays. The upgrade alone does not justify the price. The cost is hard to avoid. The ecosystem and long-term experience depend on what you need.
If your old phone works, keep it. If you need to change, take the previous-generation discount. Do not pay early for AI computing power and variable aperture you will not use.
