The ins and outs of mobile; explore the evolution and future of smartphones and how mobile technology impacts the way we live and communicate.
Beware the Phone Sharks!
This week I decided to update my mobile phone. I never buy anything without doing my research first. I may be a silver surfer, but I'm certainly no techno-phobe and I wanted a smart phone which would serve both my personal and business needs, with a few added extras. A better camera would be a bonus, as would a decent sound output so I could listen to music on the go. Work-wise, I wanted quick and easy access to my contacts by text, email, and social media. Security measures such as fingerprint and facial recognition would be cool, but not on my list of essentials.

The Advancements of Technology
Welcome to the 21st Century, where almost everybody owns or have owned at least one digital device, whether it is a smartphone, a tablet, a laptop, a desktop, an e-reader, a digital camera, a smart TV, or anything else that they have come up with in the last 10 minutes that I have not caught wind of yet. With the rate that Apple pops out with their plethora of idevices, it really would not shock me too much if I missed out on the premier of something new while sitting here typing my little heart away. Smartphone technology is still relatively in its toddler stages and already has dominated the industry. It is rare, although not unheard of, to see someone with a basic cellular telephone or without a cellular device at all for that matter. I was driving home the other day I and ended up behind a school bus in the midst of unloading its passengers. I watched the expressions on their faces as they walked along the sidewalk smiling down at their smartphones… wait, WHAT?! Every single one of these kids were sporting iPhones and other types of hundred dollar mobile devices right along with their Hello Kitty and Transformers backpacks. I couldn’t help but to think about how different things were back when I was growing up. After Christmas break, you may have seen a kid or two on the bus with a new Sony Discman or a Gameboy Advance but other than that we did things that I seldom see young people do, such as talk to each other or read a book.

How to Curb Internet Addictions
At the darkest time of the year I chose to take a break from wifi in my home. Having this time and space allowed me the opportunity for reflection on an aspect of my life that I was feeling the need to assess. I was feeling the pull to examine how my relationship with technology and social media has evolved, or rather, has regressed.

Cell Phone Etiquette!!!
Will somebody please tell me something? What in the world is wrong with some people? When I was a lad no bigger than a banana, they had this extraordinary device called a telephone at home. It was nice and, like me, it only came in black. As I grew older (and maybe dumber), I discovered that these devices were also outside scattered around in various neighborhoods. The difference is that you needed a coin (10 cents) to operate them. And, like home, you had the added luxury called privacy. At home, if you were alone, no one else could hear your conversation. Outside, all you had to do is step into the phone booth, close the door behind you, drop your dime into the device, dial the number and chat away. It (and life) was that easy.

Britain, a Nation of Mobile Phone Fiddlers
Britain, and I dare say the rest of the world, has become a nation of mobile phone fiddlers—official! And if the vast numbers of polycarbonate rectangles that appear every time someone gets on a bus are any guide, I'd say the habit has spread at an alarming rate. Not quite pandemic, but not far from it. Don't misunderstand me, I'm probably as guilty as anyone. And I'm definitely not hurling slings and arrows at mobile phones.

Have We Lost Something?
Is there something that has been lost in our modern age? Audiences have become unrulier. People have become more disconnected. Nothing is shocking or surprising to an audience who's gone numb to anything sexual or violent. All around we are a different society that is attached to the phones in our pocket, but has that caused the loss of something.
