Singapore's GIC Plans US$30 Billion Hedge Fund Expansion While Betting on AI
US$30 billion
Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC is preparing to invest an additional US$30 billion into hedge funds over the next three years, signalling confidence that active investment strategies will perform well in today's increasingly unpredictable global economy.
The announcement comes as GIC reported its lowest long-term investment returns since 2020. Despite the softer performance, the fund remains optimistic about future opportunities, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI), while continuing to prioritize diversification and long-term wealth preservation.
Expanding Hedge Fund Investments
GIC's Group Chief Investment Officer, Bryan Yeo, said the sovereign wealth fund plans to allocate another US$30 billion across several hedge fund strategies over the next three years.
Rather than concentrating on a single investment style, GIC will focus on three key areas: global macro funds, quantitative funds, and multi-strategy hedge funds. These investment approaches are known for their flexibility, allowing managers to shift quickly between asset classes and adjust portfolios as market conditions change.
According to Yeo, today's investment environment is filled with uncertainty, making active risk management more valuable than ever. He noted that these hedge fund managers are well positioned to respond to rapidly changing economic and geopolitical conditions.
The latest commitment also reflects GIC's growing confidence in alternative investments. Over the past decade, the fund has already tripled its hedge fund exposure worldwide.
Long-Term Returns Ease but Remain Solid
Alongside the investment announcement, GIC released its latest annual report, showing an annualized 20-year real rate of return of 3.4% for the financial year ending March 31, 2026.
While the figure is lower than last year's 3.8%, it remains a respectable long-term performance given the challenging investment landscape. It also marks the weakest return since 2020, when GIC reported a 2.7% real return.
The real rate of return measures investment performance after accounting for global inflation, making it one of the most important indicators of how well the fund has preserved and grown Singapore's national reserves over the long run.
In nominal terms, before adjusting for inflation, GIC achieved an annualized return of 5.6% in U.S. dollar terms.
Although returns have moderated, Chief Executive Lim Chow Kiat explained that the results were largely expected because GIC deliberately adopted a more cautious investment strategy in recent years.
Rather than chasing higher returns through greater risk, the fund focused on diversification and capital preservation, consistent with its long-term mandate of protecting Singapore's foreign reserves.
Analysts View the Results Positively
Despite the decline in long-term returns, investment analysts believe GIC still delivered a strong overall performance.
According to Diego Lopez, founder of Global SWF, GIC benefited from its increasing exposure to U.S. markets, equities, and technology investments.
Using his firm's proprietary estimates, Lopez suggested GIC may have generated a single-year return of around 22% for the latest financial year. He also estimated that the fund's assets under management have grown significantly, rising from roughly US$936 billion to approximately US$1.16 trillion.
GIC itself does not publicly disclose the total size of its investment portfolio.
Staying Bullish on Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence remains one of GIC's biggest long-term investment themes.
Although technology stocks have experienced increased volatility as investors question whether massive AI spending will generate sufficient returns, GIC believes the sector still offers attractive long-term opportunities.
Rather than placing all its bets on one segment of the AI industry, the sovereign wealth fund is investing across the broader ecosystem.
Its strategy includes companies developing AI infrastructure, businesses building AI software and models, and firms that use AI to improve productivity and operational efficiency.
At the same time, GIC acknowledges that certain parts of the AI market may currently be overvalued.
Yeo noted that some areas, including AI chips, data centres, power infrastructure, and foundation models, have attracted enormous investor interest, making it increasingly difficult to identify long-term winners.
Nevertheless, GIC believes maintaining broad exposure across the AI value chain provides a more balanced approach while reducing concentration risk.
A New Investment Framework
To better navigate increasingly volatile markets, GIC has also introduced a refreshed investment framework that officially took effect on April 1.
The updated structure groups investments into three broad categories:
Equities, which focus on long-term growth.
Fixed income, providing stable income and capital preservation.
Real assets, offering protection against inflation.
Under this framework, hedge fund investments will be allocated across these categories depending on each manager's investment strategy.
The new approach gives GIC greater flexibility to shift capital as economic conditions evolve, allowing it to respond more quickly to changing market dynamics.
Portfolio Allocation Shifts
GIC's latest portfolio allocation reflects its growing confidence in equities despite market uncertainty.
As of March 31, 2026:
Equities accounted for 56% of the portfolio, up from 51% a year earlier.
Fixed income declined to 22%, compared with 26% previously.
Real assets remained relatively stable at 22%.
Geographically, the Americas continue to dominate GIC's investment portfolio, representing 53% of total exposure.
GIC's decision to invest another US$30 billion into hedge funds highlights how major institutional investors are adapting to a world marked by geopolitical tensions, higher interest rates, inflation concerns, and rapid technological change.
While the fund acknowledges that markets have become more complex, it believes diversified portfolios, active investment strategies, and carefully selected AI opportunities will continue to generate sustainable long-term returns.
As one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds, GIC's investment decisions are closely watched by global financial markets. Its latest moves suggest that while caution remains important, the fund continues to see significant opportunities in alternative investments and the future growth of artificial intelligence.
