One of my colleagues, Cristin, has joined a new company. On his first day, his manager handed him the login credentials of a newly created Microsoft account and said all your project files will be here. You must migrate OneDrive to OneDrive. Sounds general, right? But not actually.

Although Cristin has enough experience in organizing OneDrive to OneDrive migration with data like folders, personal, notes, drafts, etc, but he is now again going to face a familiar but challenging situation.

Actually, OneDrive to OneDrive tenant migration is not a new task for Cristin, but the way and the steps he follows to do so always put him in trouble. Now he doesn't want to get frustrated or stuck in a lossy situation, so he contacted me.

As a migration specialist, I’ve suggested a few manual ways for OneDrive to OneDrive data migration. If you are going to manage or migrate OneDrive to OneDrive, then the process doesn’t have to be complicated. I’ve mentioned here what I have suggested. Take a look over there!!

Why You Might Look for OneDrive to OneDrive Migration?

OneDrive to OneDrive migration is not a general task; it has to have a motive. Some of the reasons for the OneDrive to OneDrive tenant migration are:

  • When you switch organizations or domains to another one.
  • Looking to separate personal and professional OneDrive data.
  • Reached the account storage limit.
  • Need to restructure or consolidate the data.

Whatever the reasons you have, the goal is always the same: move the file securely, with full accuracy.

Manual Ways for OneDrive to OneDrive Migration (Step-by-Step)

Before a professional solution, here are some manual ways and their step-by-step process that I forwarded to Cristin. You can also go through them if looking for OneDrive to OneDrive Business migration:

Method 1: Download and Upload (The Classic Way)

It is the classic way that most of the Microsoft users depend on. Here, you need to download the file that you want from the source OneDrive account and then upload it to the destination OneDrive account. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Login to the source OneDrive account, select the files that you want to migrate, and download them.
  2. Now login to the target OneDrive account. Click the + icon and tap on the Upload Files or Upload Folder option.
  3. Browse and select your downloaded files & tap Upload.

The source OneDrive data will be uploaded to the target OneDrive account. It might take a few minutes. Another thing, be aware and stay concentrated to reduce the risk of missing files during upload.

Method 2: Drag & Drop Technique

Drag & drop method for OneDrive to OneDrive data migration is a useful way that users prefer sometimes. If you want to do so, go through the steps below:

  1. Login and open your source OneDrive account and target OneDrive account in different adjacent browsers.
  2. Select the files from the source OneDrive, drag them, and drop them in the target OneDrive account.
  3. Do follow the same steps to migrate the files you need. However, it is slightly faster but can be messy for large data.

Method 3: Sharing Files to Business Account

File sharing is also an effective way that you can use to migrate OneDrive to OneDrive. The following steps are here to help you out:

  1. Login to the source OneDrive, select files, and tap on the Share button.
  2. Provide the target OneDrive account and select Can Edit via pencil icon as the permission level. Click Send.
  3. Login to the target OneDrive account & accept the invitation. Open the files & tap on Copy.
  4. Provide the location where you want to keep the data, then click Copy here.

It requires no download, no drag & drop. By just a simple sharing approach, you can achieve OneDrive to OneDrive migration.

Limitations of the Manual Method:

  • Time-consuming for bulk data.
  • Manual hassle and chance for error.
  • Risk of data loss always.
  • No metadata preservation.
  • Needs enough local storage.

Conclusion

The OneDrive to OneDrive migration process may seem easy at first, but as Cristin faced, it can quickly become messy without the right approach. The manual ways are good for small or one-time migrations, but they have limitations that can put a barrier when accuracy and scalability matter. If your data is important (and it usually is), use the reliable OneDrive to OneDrive migration methods and OneDrive migration solution. Because it isn’t about moving files, it is about moving forward with zero disruption.
