Seven Google Alternative Search Engines You Didn't Know About
“Just Google it!” Maybe because Google is the face of the internet. But, did you know that you have way more search engines to choose from? Today we’re taking a look at six, I mean seven.
I wouldn’t say these are better, I’m not sure what that would mean to you because security isn’t everything, or maybe it is it all depends on what you're looking for. We all have our preferences and priorities so usually those come first. Most of the search engines that we’ll talk about here are security focused while Google, well… We can say that's a story for another day.
I look forward to the day that Google finally pays attention to what matters most to the users but themselves. But, until that happens we have other search engines to get things done with. The first of the list:
Bing
Microsoft’s very own. The second big deal when it comes to search engines after Google. Bing features yahoo for searches and is quite visual friendly “if there’s such a thing”. I personally have never been a fan of bing myself but I've made some tests using the search engine and it's everything people say it is and probably more.
- Best search engine for videos and also offers some great features for programmers.
DuckDuckgo
Biased views here! This is my personal favorite. Google search engine comes by default on Google Chrome, Bing on Microsoft Edge, and DuckDuckgo on Firefox, and Tor which is a modified version of Mozilla firefox but it is still a seperate and different browser so we'll make it count. When the topic is privacyout of all the other search engines I've mentioned Duckduckgo is usually the most talked about search engine.
Ecosia
Neat user interface, in a way similar to Google. This would also make an interesting Google alternative. Simple to use without many trackers.
- Ecoasia claims to use their profits to plant trees — a must love search engine what's best than knowing that your searches alone might be helping this search engine make a difference.
Search Encrypt
Like most privacy focused search engines Search Encrypt claims not to store user data and uses local encryption to protect user searches. Clean and simple user interface.
- Intercept & Redirect
- Advanced Encryption Technique
- Expiring Search History
Yandex
This stands here as the 5th most popular search engine after yahoo. Yandex is very popular in Russia and you could say it stands as a competitor for Google as it offers similar features like web browser, mobile applications, and more.
Qwant
Qwant is a privacy focused search engine that respects privacy it has been around since 2013. Based on Wikipedia in January earlier this year Qwant was considered the 105th most visited website in France and the 1458th most visited website in the world. That proves Qwant is a privacy focused search engine of choice to an interesting number of people after Duckduckgo. This privacy focused search engine also offers:
- Maps - one can use as an alternative to Google Maps
- Junior - Moderated version of Qwant that is ideal to 6-12 year old children
Disconnect
This had to be here, Disconnect is something else, it reroutes your queries to their servers to make you anonymous and displays the result in whichever search engine you’ve selected. This is really an interesting one to give a try. Considering that it has no platform of its own for searches it’s more like a browser add on.
Open-Source and available for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, Android, and iOS.
Disconnect also provides a VPN app for iPhone and Mac.
