Putting personal information online can give hackers and identity thieves a hot ticket to criminal activity. But in this day and age, it is increasingly difficult for those who wish to live off the grid to stay private, as so much of our data lives in online spaces. However, along with the increased amount of information being displayed online is the continual implementation of privacy methods and technologies that pledge to protect your identity online. The following strategies can go to great lengths in helping you protect your identity in the digital age.

Use a Private Browsing Mode

A computer is a giant memory bank of information, tracking what each user has searched for, storing cookies, and creating shortcuts that make it easier for the user to log into sites without entering passwords each time. While these shortcuts and search histories can cut time when a user intends to visit a website, many individuals do not enjoy their internet activity being tracked and logged into servers. Many browsers offer their own methods for browsing in a private mode, with Chrome’s being called Incognito Mode. Essentially, searching the internet with these modes prevents others from seeing one’s browsing history and rids you of the meticulous task of erasing your search history.

Don’t Click Just Anywhere

It has long been ingrained in people’s minds that clicking on sketchy links can lead to computer viruses and information being stolen. However, hackers are becoming even more clever with their attempts, posing as reputable companies and disguising their methods. This is why it is of utmost importance to be a mindful internet user by paying attention to email addresses, calling your bank before clicking on a link, and viewing the destination URL prior to clicking on a link.

Invest in Antivirus Software

Because some hacking attempts can be more inconspicuous than others, it is also beneficial to your privacy to invest in antivirus software for your devices. This software is a proven way to keep your personal information out of the wrong hands, protecting your identity, location, bank statements, and more from hackers trying to access your computer or other devices. This software will come equipped with the latest technologies and methods for spotting any malware and keeping your information in safe hands. Generally speaking, your information is safer when you invest in antivirus software and install updates as quickly as they are released.
