I Watched $43,000 Vanish in Real Time: The 11 Minutes That Killed FTX Pakistan
My FTX balance at 6:49pm on November 8, 2022: $43,217.34
My FTX balance at 7:00pm: $0.00
It didn’t crash. It didn’t get hacked. It got “withdrawn.” To a wallet I don’t own. By someone who wasn’t me. While I was logged in, watching.
Before: The trust fallacy
I was 25 in 2022. Software engineer in Lahore. I’d been in crypto since 2020. Made money on ETH, lost money on Luna, learned my lesson. “Not your keys, not your coins,” right?
Except FTX wasn’t a sketchy Telegram exchange. It was _FTX_. Super Bowl ads. Tom Brady. “The most regulated exchange in the world.” Sam Bankman-Fried was on Bloomberg every week. He was “effective altruism.” He was wearing shorts in Congress.
I moved my savings there because my bank in Pakistan gave 6% while inflation was 27%. FTX gave 8% on USD. It was FDIC-insured, they said. I was being “smart.”
*The 11 minutes*
Nov 8, 2022. 6:42pm. I was in a Careem, stuck at Kalma Chowk. Twitter was on fire: “FTX withdrawals paused.” “Binance might acquire.” I opened the app to pull my money.
6:49pm: I hit “Withdraw All.” To my Binance USDC address. I’d done it 20 times before. Normal time: 3 minutes.
6:52pm: Status: “Processing.” My balance still $43,217.34. Twitter says “FTX withdrawals back online for some users.” I exhale.
6:56pm: Status: “Processing.” I refresh. Balance: $43,217.34. I take a screenshot. Just in case.
6:58pm: The app logs me out. “Session expired.” I type my password. “Incorrect password.” I hit “Forgot Password.”
6:59pm: Email arrives: “Your FTX password was changed.” I didn’t change it.
7:00pm: I get back in using email reset. Balance: $0.00.
Withdraw history shows: “6:59pm – Withdrawal Complete – $43,217.34 – to 0x59ab...f3c1”
That wasn’t my Binance address. I’ve never seen that wallet before or since.
*After: The crime scene*
I wasn’t hacked. FTX was.
Later we’d learn Nov 8-11 was chaos. SBF was secretly moving customer funds to Alameda. When Binance pulled out of the deal, insiders started draining wallets. $600M+ moved in 48 hours. Some to “save it,” some to steal it.
My $43k was part of it. A foot soldier in a 9-figure heist. The address it went to was later tagged “FTX Drainer” by Etherscan. It funded a wallet that funded a wallet that vanished into Tornado Cash.
I filed a police report in Lahore. The officer asked, “What is FTX? Is it like JazzCash?” I filed with the FBI IC3 portal. Never heard back. I joined the FTX creditor portal. Current recovery estimate: 12-18%. Maybe 2027. Maybe.
*The lifehack nobody wants*
Everyone says “not your keys, not your coins” after an exchange hack. It’s true. But it’s also useless. Here’s what I actually do now, 4 years later, and what saved my next $20k:
1. *The 48-hour rule* – Money on an exchange stays max 48 hours. Buy, move to cold wallet. If you’re “earning yield,” you’re the yield.
2. *Withdrawals test every time* – Before I deposit $5k, I deposit $20 and withdraw it first. If it takes >10 min, I don’t use that exchange. FTX started delaying withdrawals 3 days before collapse. That was the signal.
3. *No SMS 2FA* – They SIM-swapped 3 of my friends during FTX. I use YubiKey + Authy now. If an exchange doesn’t support it, I don’t use it.
4. *Trust nobody with shorts* – This one’s not financial advice. But if a CEO testifies to Congress in cargo shorts while moving $8B of customer money, run.
*The ask*
Check your exchange right now. How long would it take to get your money out? If the answer is “I don’t know,” find out today.
Do a $10 withdrawal. Time it. If it fails, you just paid $10 to learn you’re at risk.
I watched $43k disappear in 11 minutes. It took me 18 months to save it. It’ll take 5+ years to maybe get 12% back.
The crypto crime isn’t that exchanges get hacked. It’s that we keep trusting them anyway.
My $43k is gone. But my 2FA is hardware now. My coins are cold. And I never leave more than $200 on an exchange.
Because FTX taught me: the only “effective altruism” in crypto is effectively leaving with your money.
