One Second of Silence in the Boardroom

That's how long it took for Tencent's WorkBuddy to steal the AI crown while ByteDance's drooling cartoon face froze the room—and the deal.

  1. Every tech company had five or more Agents.

Two for code. Three for office. Names blurred together. Users couldn't remember them. Products looked alike. Features overlapped. No one knew which one to open.

Tencent stopped the others.

They routed all traffic into one door. WorkBuddy.

One product. One brand. One ad campaign.

Subway light boxes changed. Elevator screens changed. Phone splash screens changed. A blue background. One line of text. One button. Sign up, get credits.

OpenClaw launched. Traffic surged. The peak came. User numbers doubled.

ByteDance saw the numbers.

They shut down three projects. Merged two teams. Pushed Feishu into the Doubao system.

Qianchang learned one thing. Douchang learned one thing. Not WorkBuddy's product. They learned "focus."

But they didn't change the name.

Doubao stayed Doubao. That mascot stayed. A yellow cartoon face. Drool at the corner of the mouth. A silly grin. People used it as stickers on Douyin. Young users loved it.

Then ByteDance put it into a computer.

Weekly meeting. The manager asked: "What tools are you using?"

One person opened Codex. Code ran. Another opened WorkBuddy. A PPT generated itself.

It was the third person's turn. He opened Doubao PC.

The screen lit up. That drooling face popped up. The room went quiet for one second.

No one laughed. No one spoke. The manager glanced. The manager said nothing. The meeting continued.

That face didn't belong in the conference room. It belonged in bedrooms. On subway rides. Not in financial reports. Not in yearly summaries. Not in front of clients.

ByteDance had something that belonged in the conference room. Feishu.

Feishu's interface was clean. Feishu users opened it eight times a day. Approval flows. Document libraries. Calendars. Feishu's brand had no drool.

ByteDance didn't put the Agent into Feishu. They shoved it into Doubao. Then added "PC" to the name.

Three characters didn't fix the problem.

The problem wasn't function. The problem was the picture. A VP opened a laptop. A client sat across. That drooling face on the screen. The client asked: "Is this a toy?" How could the VP answer.

WorkBuddy didn't have that problem.

WorkBuddy's icon was blue. Sharp corners. Cold tones. It looked like a tool.

WorkBuddy launched its open platform. Not a press release. They opened APIs. One hundred partners plugged in. Financial systems connected. ERPs connected. Even printers. Users didn't switch windows. They typed in WorkBuddy. Data flowed back from everywhere.

WorkBuddy didn't explain how smart it was. It did things.

Doubao did things too. But that face got in the way.

Someone inside ByteDance suggested renaming. Feishu Assistant. Feishu Terminal. Whatever. No one approved. The brand was already out. Budget spent. Changing the name meant admitting failure.

Second half of 2026. ByteDance fully merged Feishu into Doubao. Structure adjusted. People moved. But externally it stayed Doubao PC.

The window for renaming was closing.

Tencent made WorkBuddy a foundation. ByteDance still wrestled with that drooling face.

WorkBuddy ran ads. Users clicked. They used it. They stayed.

Doubao ran ads. Users clicked. They saw that face. They remembered Douyin. Free chat. Stickers. Then they closed it.

No one opened Doubao in conference rooms anymore.

When the manager asked the third time, that person said: "I'll switch."

He downloaded WorkBuddy.

ByteDance made Doubao big. Big in consumer. Big in daily actives. Big for young people's lunch break entertainment.

But a desk is not a lunch table.

A desk needs a tool. Not a toy.

WorkBuddy won the first round. ByteDance consolidated teams. Alibaba consolidated too. Everyone learned "focus."

Only one thing couldn't be learned.

That face.

ByteDance drew that face themselves.

To fix it wasn't a product route change. It was that drooling face. But that face was worth billions in DAU.

No one dared to touch it.

So someone would still open Doubao in meetings. That face would still pop up. The office would still go quiet for that one second.

In that one second, WorkBuddy signed another enterprise client.
