Nvidia Doubles Down on AI Infrastructure with Strategic Investment in Data Center Developer Cloverleaf

The chipmaker's minority stake in the power-focused infrastructure company marks the latest move in a multi-billion-dollar campaign to secure the foundational resources needed to sustain the AI buildout.

Nvidia is doing everything it can to keep fueling the AI buildout that has underpinned its own good fortunes. On Friday, it announced a partnership with Cloverleaf Infrastructure, a company that lays the groundwork for data centers. The deal is part of Nvidia's ongoing push to use its immense profits to keep the AI flywheel spinning, as the chipmaker increasingly plays a more direct role in financing and developing the AI data centers that turn around and buy its AI systems.

The Partnership

Cloverleaf was founded in 2024 and raised $300 million that year from energy investors NGP and Sandbrook Capital. It acts as a kind of middleman between utility companies and data centers, providing power sources and other kinds of pivotal infrastructure for site development. The company specializes in securing power and other critical infrastructure for data center sites, effectively creating "powered land" sites with guaranteed electricity access that are ready for development.

Since its founding, Cloverleaf has sold projects comprising more than 7 gigawatts of powered land to data center developers, including sites in Wisconsin for Oracle and OpenAI. The company currently has more than 10 gigawatts in its development pipeline. Its founding team brings deep industry expertise: CEO David Berry previously co-founded clean energy companies, Chief Commercial Officer Brian Janous was formerly Microsoft's energy VP, and CTO Jonathan Abebe held senior roles at the U.S. Department of Energy.

While the companies didn't disclose terms, the Wall Street Journal reports that Nvidia's investment in Cloverleaf will likely add up to several hundred million dollars. Reuters reports that the chipmaker now owns a minority stake in the company.

Beyond capital, the partnership includes a significant technology component. Cloverleaf will deploy Nvidia's DSX™ infrastructure design platform, which integrates site selection, power, cooling, and computing decisions early in the development process. This allows customers to evaluate trade-offs across infrastructure constraints and build AI factories within existing power, water, and grid capacity limits.

A Strategic Pivot Toward Power

The Cloverleaf investment is the latest in a series of moves by Nvidia to secure the foundational resources needed for AI infrastructure. Just days earlier, the company announced it would invest $1.5 billion into SB Energy, an OpenAI-linked data center project based in Ohio.

The broader pattern reveals a clear strategy. On August 8, reports surfaced that Nvidia was in talks to invest up to $3 billion in Texas power developer Lancium. On August 10, Nvidia announced a partnership with Apollo, BlackRock, and four other top financial institutions to create an AI infrastructure financing platform exceeding $500 billion. On August 17, Nvidia confirmed its $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy, securing exclusive supply of computing equipment for OpenAI's Ohio campus.

From Chips to Power: A Vertical Integration Strategy

The logic behind this vertical integration is straightforward. AI data centers require massive amounts of electricity, often hundreds of megawatts or even gigawatts per facility. As Nvidia Global AI Infrastructure Growth VP Nico Caprez put it, "AI factories are the infrastructure of the intelligent age, and land, power, and the building itself are their foundation".

Cloverleaf CEO David Berry emphasized the urgency: "AI is accelerating demand for digital infrastructure at an unprecedented scale". By securing power sources and development sites early in the process, Nvidia ensures that its chips have places to go and that those places are built with Nvidia's technology stack integrated from the ground up.

From Chips to Data Centers to Power

The Cloverleaf partnership reflects a fundamental shift in how Nvidia approaches the AI market. The company is no longer just a chip designer selling to data center operators; it is becoming an active participant in the entire infrastructure stack, from power procurement to site development to financing.

This vertical integration strategy mirrors Nvidia's broader ambitions. By controlling more of the infrastructure chain, the company can ensure that its technology is deployed at scale, reduce bottlenecks that could slow the AI buildout, and capture value at multiple points in the ecosystem. The Cloverleaf investment, along with the SB Energy deal and the Lancium discussions, positions Nvidia as a key player not just in AI computing, but in the energy and infrastructure that make AI computing possible.
