NotebookLM Is Dead, Long Live Gemini Notebook
AI product

Google can't help itself. If you build an AI product and it gets popular, sooner or later, Google's going to slap the Gemini name on it, and NotebookLM just became the latest casualty of that pattern.
The research tool, which started life back in 2023 under the much stranger name "Project Tailwind," is officially becoming Gemini Notebook. Alongside the rename, Google's also adding some genuinely useful new capabilities, not just a fresh coat of branding paint.
From a weird I/O demo to 30 million users
NotebookLM's actual journey is kind of a nice one, if you ignore the constant renaming. It started as Project Tailwind, shown off at Google I/O back in 2023 as basically a smarter note-taking tool. Since then, it's grown into something with 30 million users and over 600,000 organizations relying on it, which is a genuinely big deal for a product that started as a somewhat obscure experiment.
Along the way, Google kept bolting features onto it. There's the interactive podcast generation thing, where the AI basically creates two hosts who talk through your source material like an actual podcast episode, genuinely one of the more surprising, fun features to come out of Google in a while. There are curated notebooks, video overviews, support for way more file types than it originally had, and even an enterprise version for businesses.
NotebookLM was successful enough, in fact, that it basically spawned its own mini category. Meta released an open version of the podcast-generation feature. ElevenLabs built a direct competitor aimed at doing the same "turn your documents into a podcast" trick. Other research tools started popping up clearly inspired by what NotebookLM proved people actually wanted.
What's actually new, beyond the name
The rename isn't the only thing happening here, and honestly it's probably not even the most important part. Google's rolling out an update that turns each notebook into its own secure, self-contained environment and inside that environment, users can now generate and run actual code to make their outputs interactive.
In practical terms, that means you're not just asking questions and getting text summaries back anymore. You can pull from multiple sources at once and have the tool actually run code to do real data analysis directly inside the notebook, rather than exporting everything somewhere else to crunch the numbers.
That's a meaningful shift from what NotebookLM originally was a smart way to synthesize and query documents toward something closer to an actual analysis workspace. It's the difference between "summarize this for me" and "actually go compute something from this."
For now, this update is limited to Google AI Ultra paid plan subscribers, plus Workspace business customers who have AI Ultra Access or AI Expanded Access. If you're on the Pro tier, you'll have to wait a bit Google says that access is coming "in the coming weeks," which is corporate-speak for "we'll get to it eventually."
Where you'll actually find it
Google also mentioned that you can already access your notebooks from within the main Gemini app, which makes sense given the rebrand everything is converging into one ecosystem under the Gemini name at this point. And soon, notebooks will be accessible through AI Mode in Search too, meaning this tool is going to keep showing up in more places Google already has you using, rather than staying its own standalone destination.
That's really the underlying story of this whole rename, if you zoom out. Google keeps launching interesting standalone products under their own names NotebookLM, and plenty of others before it, building real usage and real fans, and then eventually folding them into the giant Gemini umbrella once they've proven themselves. It's a consistent enough pattern at this point that "eventually gets renamed to something with Gemini in it" is basically the expected life cycle for any successful Google AI product.
