An excessively sentimental feeling for a period or place in life where happy associations existed. The emotion can vary from happiness to sorrow.

Stimulation:

Nostalgia is often triggered by scents, like maybe a specific detergent your significant other uses, or tastes, sights, or touch. Newberg with evidence said that dopamine, the feel-good chemical in the brain, is released when we feel nostalgic.

Strongest nostalgic trigger: SMELLING

Although any of our senses are capable of inducing nostalgia, it seems like hearing music or smelling something familiar are the two most powerful triggers.

Nostalgia a happy and a sad emotion:

Nostalgia can make you cry, feel joy, and even help you strive to make happier memories for yourself and your family. However nostalgia makes you feel is perfectly normal. You might just be able to use your understanding of nostalgia to better understand yourself and your past. Newman concluded that thinking back on your memories is primarily a positive experience, and that nostalgia, practicing nostalgia, or the act of feeling nostalgic was more commonly linked to positive markers of health (like meaning in life, self-esteem, and optimism) than negative ones.

Nostaglic memories:

Memories can also be nostalgic, almost always involve family, romantic partners, or close friends. These memories also tend to involve complex emotions (happiness tinged with loss) but are overwhelmingly positive and even frequently include expressions of gratitude.

Negative side of nostalgia:

We miss and long for something before it's even over, and it leads to sadness, worry, and anxiety. An American study released in 2020 shows that, as well as affecting our reaction, poorly timed nostalgia can also affect our ability to learn from our reminiscing. In fact, nostalgia was once considered an actual psychiatric disorder that could cause anxiety, insomnia, and depression.

Types of nostalgia:

There are two types of nostalgia: positive and negative.

  1. Positive nostalgia: is characterized by happy, rose-tinted memories of the past. 7 It is often associated with feelings of warmth, happiness, and comfort.
  2. Negative nostalgia: on the other hand, is characterized by bittersweet or even painful memories of the past.

Aesthetic nostalgia:

Nostalgiacore is an aesthetic involving nostalgia and archived history. Most senses of nostalgia focus on childhood/teenhood TV shows, movies, music, snacks, trends, fashion, video games and other forms of technology, Hangout places (such as malls), books, comics, and many other things.
