Battle of the phones

iPhone vs Samsung

Before getting into iPhones and Samsung, first we need to revisit my very first phone. My first phone ever was an LG, which happened to look like a Blackberry. Of course a lot of people assumed it was a Blackberry. Considering it was almost a perfect replica of the Blackberry, it was easily mistakable.

On a side note, this article of course is strictly my opinion and many people may have other preferences. However I hope this article provides some sort of insight, whether you're trying to compare phones, or simply just looking into phone brands.

So to start this off properly, a little backstory is required. When I was fifteen years old and finishing grade ten, I made a deal with my father. Unlike most kids my age at the time, I wanted to actually earn my phone. You see the deal was if I brought home all A's and maybe a couple of B's, he would get me a phone of my choice.

At the end of the semester I did more than that. Not only did I achieve all A’s and B’s, I also brought home not one, but two A+’s. He said a deal was a deal, which brought us to the phone store later on in the week.

At the time I had no clue what to get. Everyone is different, and since this was going to be my first phone it was an open field of many options. Now I could have chosen an iPhone or a Samsung, and even though my dad said I could choose any phone I wanted, still I didn’t want to cost him an arm and a leg. Plain and simple I wanted something I could text, call and use the internet on. After a debate, I went with a small LG, which at the time was perfect for me. Or so I thought.

The phone lasted me the rest of high school and my year of college. The downside with college is I couldn’t access anything through my phone. With the course we got a Macbook pro, with is compatible with an iPhone and not my LG, but I made it work. The more time that passed with having the LG, the more I couldn’t wait to upgrade.

After college, I started my first seasonal job and worked and saved money to upgrade my phone at the end of the season. Come November, I finally had enough saved up to confidently buy a new phone. The day I bought the phone I actually wasn’t in town with the intention of buying a phone. My dad and I were walking around the mall and I went into jump plus, with is our Apple store. I wanted to see how much an iPhone 6s would be. Of course it was a high price. Next I went to Bell, and for only $300 I got a phone set up with a new number and it came with a case of your choice.

When we went to check out, my dad went to get his bank card out, but I stopped him. I couldn’t allow him to pay for the phone. I told him I wanted the phone and I was buying it with my own money. I wanted it to be mine, something that I payed for. It was a great and satisfying experience.

It was great and connected with my Mac and I was able to use quite a few more apps. After about a couple years with the iPhone, it started acted up. Of course it would, I mean I was reaching the end of my contract and isn’t that how it usually works? It was overheating quickly, slowing down. A lot of the apps I had started to crash and the phone would not hold charge for very long. Eventually, one day, the phone flickered twice and just like that died forever. To this day, almost nine months later, it still holds the black screen of death.

Now this is where the Samsung comes in. Currently, I own a Neo Galaxy s5, which was given to me as a Christmas present from a very generous person. It was a well-used phone but it was a phone.

So far my experience with the phone has been 50/50. Some days it's great and others I wish to just whip it at a wall (which i'll admit I've already done).

First off, it has a poor storage space and bugs out way too frequently. In order to download a new app or download anything, I often have to choose an app to give up temporarily. This is a process repeated quite often. When it comes to bugging out, I don't mean your typical phone freezing. I mean you'll be sitting there doing something and the screen will open and close or change screens a few dozen times. To solve the issue, I was told to set a password on the phone to lock the screen. If your wondering if it worked, it didn't.

The second issue I encountered was charging the phone. Now I get it's an old phone, so I have to expect some difficulty with the battery life. For a period of time, 100% charge would only last 30 minutes to an hour roughly. The problem, however, temporarily fixes itself when I get a new charging chord. The thing that mainly drains my battery out is when I play a large game, which is alright.

Overall the phone provides it's main purpose. I can call, text and use the internet. Yes I would prefer an update, but there are more important ordeals in my life right now. I hope this article on my experience with phones provides some insight. However remember this is strictly my opinion and others' opinions may very.
