My decision to ditch my XR

It was time for me to upgrade my phone to a much more premium and expensive experience. For about seven months, I’ve went through two iPhone XR’s only to realize that not only did I not like the big bezels framing the screen, but I’ve read so many reviews regarding the ISP liquid LCD display.

For a phone realeased in 2018, Apple’s decision to use an ISP based LCD screen downgraded their flagship phone at the time as what most would consider a “budget Phone” which didn’t sit very well with me.And even though there weren’t any initial problems while owning an iPhone XR, I was tempted based on the Apple events, commercials and peer pressure around me from other friends who owned iPhones, to get myself an iPhone 12 Pro. I needed a way to build my credit and get to the 700 club so I decided to go with Verizon and took advantage of their exclusive deal to slowly pay off my new iPhone in addition to the monthly bill but in the process I would be able to have a cool new phone that inspired me to write a review about it.

The feel

By Hendrik Morkel on Unsplash

The moment I picked up my iPhone 12 Max Pro, the stainless steel with matted back gives it a premium feel that resonates to people who would spend $1099 to own.One of the biggest concerns I had was a phone drop situation or other malfunctions. Unfortunately a few weeks after obtaining this new iPhone 12 Max Pro, I discovered a mild scratch on the middle of the screen which was extremely annoying also hindering towards my gameplay or other viewing pleasures with it’s nice and beautiful OLED XDR display. For that reason, I went to the Apple Retail store to get my screen replaced. Appearently, Apple promises a more sturdy gorilla glass from Corning that features their cermanic shield to prevent sctratches except I’m not buying it since I scratched the screen accidentally somehow as my phone rested on it’s belt holster.

So It’s definitely a good idea to either pay for extensive warranty insurance (which I did for Verizon) and /or spend $10.69 a month on AppleCare+which will guarantee you two screen fixes per year every 12 months on any other type of maintenance if your phone were to drop or malfunction. In other words: don’t drop your phone intentionally, even if it has a a 4 times better drop crack retention rate.

The Cameras

The 2020 iPhone 12 Pro phones feature new 3 back 12 megapixel cameras. With iPhone 12 Pro Max, you get an ultra wide with ƒ/2.4 aperture , Wide with ƒ/1.6 aperture and telephoto camera ƒ/2.2 aperture with optical 2.5 zoom( only featured on the 12 Pro Max)

The 12 Pro Max features a Sensor-shift optical image stabilization so you don’t have shaky looking pictures. There’s also a new LiDAR Scanner that assist with more accurately immersive Augmented Reality images and the new Night Mode make pictures look sharper in low light without noise with better contrast.

Because of the Apple’s new A14 Bionic nuroengine chip, pictures taken are corrected using machine learning A.I technology to keep everything looking super amazing. With RAW mode, you’re able to edit your photos manually while maintaining natural light and textures.

In addition, with the iPhone 12 Pro Max , you can film Hollywood quality videos using Doby Vision at 60 frames per second in stunning 4K. Of course, all iPhone 12 phones are capable of filming in this quality but if you’re super serious with taking a lot of pictures or videos then it’s gonna be worth getting that much bigger screen with the better optimize cameras.

The biggest screen on an IPhone so far

Everything on an iPhone 12 Pro Max looks stunning thanks to it’s 6.7 inch XDR OLED retina display. With 2778‑by‑1284-pixel resolution at 458 ppi, pictures, videos and gaming looks simply amazing (even at 60Hz per frame and the newer 2021 iPhone bumped at 120Hz as a new feature) so unless you’re a tech head who can tell the difference in motion between frame rates, you’ll still enjoy the bigger display regardless.

With the XDR OLED display, you’ll notice the deeper black textures and brighter whites. Thats because OLED uses individual led lights while turning off the other led back lights so you see richer contrast in pictures. Darker darks are possible because the led lights from the OLED screen are turned off and doesn’t use a traditional backlight that LCD backlights uses.( which gives LCD screen a more washed up look due to all of the LCD lights being turned on)

The 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio makes most colors pop and look richer and more detailed than what’s currently possible with current LCD displays. In addition, thanks to The Nuroengine A.I machine learning, you’ll get a sharper, better contrasted imagine than what you usually see on camera mode.

I’d snapped pictures where the light in the sky or natural bright light in the sun seems to over brighten the white frame surrounding the picture on the photo app because of the 1200 nits which is brighter than iPhone 11 Pro.

The XDR effect that the brighter nits allow gives a life like ambience with outside imagines shot on nice sunny days and inside at night with NIGHT-Mode. So the XDR tech ran by their Nuro engines create brightness near light emitting objects within the picture taking ( lamp lights, sunlight, sky with bright light, etc)

It’s hard to explain but you’d have to test drive any iPhone 12 or newer model to see how crisp, vibrant and amazing photos look, especially when you play around with Portiat mode.

Performance

The performance is above and beyond because of the new 5G antennas and the new A14 Bionic chip built inside. I’ve been able to stream 4K videos from Netflix and Apple TV + with just 5G. Gaming was smooth with no glitches while in the middle of game play and I can have more than one app open and it’ll be able to handle everything smoothly as if one app is present. Whenever you’re near Ultrawide band 5G(Verizon Carrier), you’ll notice just how incredibly snappy downloading large files and videos seem to be.

The official benchmark for single processor as of February of 2022 is 1436. Multi-core processors are around 3951 which made the iPhone 12 Pro Max fast for it’s time of released compared to its predecessors.

The chip is a A14 Bionic chip so you’ll get fast speeds in conjunction with the ultrawide 5G coverage so there’s absolutely no lag once you stream. If you wish to know how the IPhone 12 Pro Max or Pro measures up with speed against iPhone 11 or the x, download a benchmark app.

Who should buy the iPhone 12 Pro Max?

By Denis Cherkashin on Unsplash

With the iPhone 12 Pro Max, you get the best out of the best and a smart phone developed by Apple. The three cameras are much bigger with a different sensor than on the iPhone 12 pro or iPhone 12 and 12 mini. So shooting videos while moving around will look stunning and flawless. Not to mention, with a bigger screen, Dolby Vision gives you a professional Hollywood look for all of your shots and videos for those who are pro photographers or serious up and coming film directors. If you’re a professional photographer looking for a phone that can shoot super detailed pictures in low light or looking to test out a camera with built in 4K 60 frames per second Dolby Vision technology, the $1099 (128 GB)will be worth the price for this premium stainless steel iPhone.

Whose likely not to need an IPhone 12 Pro Max

If you’re not anticipating on taking high-quality pictures or doing huge block buster like filming projects on your iPhone 12 promax, then downgrading to the 12 pro will be just fine or just an iPhone 12.

Overview pro

❤️Perfect for filming or taking professional pictures with its ultrawide, wide or telephoto lens

❤️ The OLED screen make pictures, video, and gaming looks super amazing.

❤️The fast performance with A14 and 5G bands will make your usage of the phone smooth.

Overview Cons

🚫Still at 60Hz per frame when most Android phones like the Galaxy 20 Ultra that offers 120 Hz frames per second.

🚫Texting with one hand isn’t possible because of the 6.7 inch OLED XDR screen.

🚫 Apple claims that their Ceramic Shield resist stretches and nicks from occurring on your screen, though the screen might easily sctratch if not careful. Please apply for Apple Care+ so you don’t need to pay $129 to get your screen replaced.
